El Monte City School District Holds LEGO Machines Summer Camp

El Monte School District has added a third summer offering for local students – a LEGO Machines and Mechanisms Summer Camp. The camp, announced on June 22, quickly filled all 60 available spaces. Students in grades two through six will attend online courses Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from July 6-24. In addition to the LEGO camp, El Monte City School District is offering its own online summer school and a summer math program in partnership with Río Hondo College.

Fontana Unified School Earns AVID 2020 Teacher Advocacy Award

Fontana High School has earned the 2020 Teacher Advocacy Award from Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), one of just five schools in California to receive the accolade this year. The award recognizes schools for exceptional leadership in support of the AVID mission, which is to narrow the achievement gap and improve college readiness for all students. Fontana High is an AVID National Demonstration School, a status achieved by less than 3 % of AVID schools nationwide and held by Fontana High since 2006.

Bonita Unified Partners with Redlands USD as Food Service Continues

Bonita Unified School District received fresh produce and gallons of milk from Redlands Unified School District to supplement its meal program and food distribution efforts. Bonita Unified will serve free meals to the community children throughout the summer. Meals are available from 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays at Roynon Elementary School, 2175 E St., La Verne, and at the Central Kitchen behind Chaparral High School, 121 W. Allen Ave., San Dimas.

Fontana Unified Opens Online Enrollment for 2020-21 Year

Families interested in enrolling in Fontana Unified for the 2020-21 year may begin the process online. Fontana Unified offers an array of academic and enrichment programs that begin in transitional kindergarten and kindergarten – such as coding and robotics, dual language immersion and leadership development – and prepare students for hands-on career technical education and professional pathways in high school.

El Monte City School District Develops 2020-21 Instructional Plan

El Monte City School District has convened a task force to provide recommendations and resources for EMCSD’s fall 2020 re-opening plan in four key areas: instruction, social-emotional support system, family and community engagement, and operations. The task force is composed of more than 80 members, including parents, teachers, staff members, administrators and community partners. Task force members will meet over nine weeks to address different scenarios and re-imagine District schools to maximize students’ learning experience while adhering to health and safety guidelines. A plan will be presented to the Board of Education for approval on Friday, July 31.

Río Hondo College Student Trustee Shares Perspectives on Pandemic, Protest and Education

Río Hondo College student Marcela Rodas, who is studying English and psychology, has been chosen as the College’s 2020-21 student trustee. Rodas, a 2017 graduate of Los Altos School in Hacienda Heights, said her goal is to provide the perspective of students on issues such as the pandemic and equity in education. In 2019-20, she served as senator at-large for the Associated Students of Río Hondo College.

Whittier Union Adult School Launches Online Summer Program

While campuses remain physically closed, Whittier Union Adult School will offer short, intensive summer courses online, providing students the flexibility and ability to continue their professional and academic development from home. Some online certificates and courses that will be offered include business communication, data science, human resources, leadership, management, training and education. Classes begin Monday, July 6.

El Monte Union to Discuss Learning Options for Fall at Virtual Forum

Community members, parents, and students will learn about El Monte Union High School District’s Reopening of Schools planning, safety measures and the learning options it is exploring for students and staff once the 2020-21 academic year launches on Tuesday, Aug. 18 during a Virtual Community Forum at 4 p.m. Monday, June 29. Parents, students and staff are also being asked to fill out a survey to discuss their preferences.

Monrovia Unified’s Clifton Middle School Hosts Online Musical

Clifton Middle School theater students will take part in the school’s summer musical, to be hosted online at 7 p.m. Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27. The event replaces Clifton Middle School’s spring musical, canceled due to the extended school closures. The online musical will premiere on YouTube and Facebook

Whittier Union to Place $183.5 Million Facilities Bond on November Ballot

The Whittier Union High School District Board of Trustees unanimously voted on June 9 to place a $183.5 million facilities bond on the Nov. 3, 2020 ballot to address necessary repairs and renovations, improve school safety and technology, and upgrade career education and science/computer classrooms across District facilities. Whittier Union voters previously supported Measure C in 1999 and Measure W in 2008, authorizing $173 million to transform schools into modern, state-of-the-art facilities. The District concluded its construction program in 2019.
