Baldwin Park Unified Robotics Teams Qualify for State Championships

Baldwin Park Unified’s BP STEM Academy qualified two robotics teams for the VEX State Championships, after a day of grueling Rio Hondo Middle School League competition on Jan. 29. Each team took first place in its qualifying matches, earning special recognitions, including the title of Tournament Champions. The VEX State Championships will be held on Sunday, March 13 in San Diego.

Lynwood Unified Teacher Performs at Tournament of Roses Parade

Vista High School band teacher Mario Castro began the new year on a musical note, joining the U.S. Air Force Total Force Band for its captivating 75th anniversary performance at the Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 1. Some of Castro’s Vista High students made the trek to Pasadena to cheer him on during his performance. Castro holds the rank of Senior Airman and has been an Air National Guard Musician with the Total Force Band since 2017. Castro has played the euphonium and trombone since high school.

Lynwood Unified Senior Signs with Division I NAIA University

Firebaugh High School senior Belkis Urrutia has signed on to play basketball for Bethesda University, making her the first Lady Falcon in 10 years to sign to a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division I college team. The NAIA has been dedicated to student success via athletic programs since 1937, with over 77,000 students earning more than 800 million in scholarships every year and having the opportunity to participate in national championships.

El Monte Union Selects Trustee Area Map, Finalizes Election Sequence

The El Monte Union High School District Board of Trustees adopted a final trustee map – NDC Green 3 – and sequence of elections during a public hearing on Feb. 2, as it prepares to transition from an at-large to by-trustee area election process beginning in November 2022. The District will present the map to the L.A. County Committee on School District Organization for consideration in the coming months. Baldwin Park Unified to Hold Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for Baseball Field

Baldwin Park High School will hold a special ribbon-cutting event at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, to celebrate the official unveiling of the school’s upgraded baseball field during the Brave’s first home game of the season. The ceremony will be followed by the first pitch at 1 p.m. Baldwin Park High is located at 3900 Puente Ave., Baldwin Park.

Whittier Union Requests Stakeholder Input as Board Considers Selection of Next Superintendent

The Whittier Union High School District Board of Trustees decided during its Jan. 11 board meeting to begin gathering written and oral comments from District stakeholders as they prepare to select the District’s next superintendent. As part of the process, the school community and public are invited to submit written input through an online survey available through Friday, Jan. 28. The survey will also be posted on Whittier Union’s website. Additionally, the District will host a Community Input Session at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 25, to hear directly from stakeholders regarding the selection of the next superintendent. The input session will take place in-person at the United Sierra Education Center gymnasium, located at 9401 S. Painter Ave.

South El Monte High School celebrated former and current Associated Student Body (ASB) members at their ASB Induction Ceremony in December, which emphasized their hard work and dedication during distance learning in 2020-21 and their successful return to campus in 2021-22. Despite spending the majority of their 2021 term online, student leaders came together and planned opportunities for students to stay engaged and have fun while following COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Covina-Valley Unified School District Named to Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools

Covina-Valley Unified School District was named a returning member of the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools for their commitment to promoting educational equity, establishing innovative school-wide programs, infusing technology in all aspects of learning, and advancing positive change in public education. The District was previously named a member of the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools’ 2017-2018 cohort and re-selected after a year of transitional leadership. Examples of innovation can be seen throughout the District—including their seamless transition to online learning amid school closures, cutting-edge career technical education pathways, National SAT Day participation and dual enrollment programs.

Whittier Union Students Learn Real World Skills in Biomedical Class

Whittier High School science students are receiving hands-on knowledge of biology through the lens of the medical field thanks to a new Project Lead the Way (PLTW) biomedical science class. Launched in fall of 2021, the class gives Whittier High students a life science option and encourages a broader scope in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. The PLTW biomedical science class is designed to inspire students to consider careers in the medical and forensics fields. The PLTW biomedical science class is a college prep and honors level course and is open to all students. Additionally, the class serves as the Specifically Designed Academic Instruction in English biology class for Whittier High’s English learner students.
