Norwalk Lions Club Honors Elementary Educator as Teacher of the Year

Kindergarten teacher Denise Daguimol of Norwalk-La Mirada Unified’s Nuffer Elementary School has been honored as the Norwalk Lions Club 2016 Teacher of the Year for her dedication in supporting students and fellow teachers. Daguimol was recognized during the Lions Club 2016 Awards Banquet held on June 10. Daguimol, who is also Norwalk-La Mirada Unified’s 2016 Teacher of the Year, received an engraved apple from the Lions Club. Photos are available.

Norwalk-La Mirada Middle School Launches College and Career Center

Benton Middle School on Aug. 24 launched its new college and career center to provide students with resources to plan for their future. A tech corner is available for students to research colleges and take assessments that will match them with potential careers and colleges. Resources will be provided on scholarships, colleges and careers and students can ask questions and receive guidance from an on-site counselor. Photos are available.

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified Teachers Provide Backpacks, Supplies

The Teachers Association of Norwalk-La Mirada (TANLA) continued its tradition of providing school supplies for students in need, distributing 600 backpacks to Norwalk-La Mirada Unified students during TANLA’s third annual “Caring Beyond the Classroom” event held Aug. 20 at the NLMUSD District office. Over 40 NLMUSD teachers, all wearing bright red “Caring Beyond the Classroom” T-shirts, handed out backpacks filled with supplies like crayons, binders, pencil boxes, highlighters, books, erasers and notepads, as well as providing fresh fruit and bottled water to all students who attended. Norwalk-La Mirada Unified Funds SATs, PSATs for More Than 7,000 Students

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified invested more than $83,000 to provide free aptitude tests, including the SATs and PSATs, for more than 7,000 students in October. Seniors took the SATs, sophomores and juniors took the PSATs and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT), and freshmen took the PSAT 8/9 on Oct. 19, while eighth-graders took the PSAT 8/9 on Oct. 13.

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified Offers Free, Reduced-Price Meals

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District is announcing its policy for providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program. Each school and/or the district/agency’s central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party on request.Meal applications will be sent to all households with letters informing parents or guardians of the availability of free and reduced-price meals. To apply, complete one application for all children in the household and submit to the school for processing. Additional copies are available at the school office or families may apply online at nlmusd.heartlandapps.com">www.nlmusd.heartlandapps.com and submit an application at any time during the school year. Information provided on the application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year by school officials.

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified Teacher uses Challenges to Inspire Bilingual Students

Edmondson Elementary School dual-language teacher Mayra Salguero has been awarded the Read Conmingo Bilingual Educator of the Year award for her dedication to helping students speak and read in English and Spanish and learn Latin culture through art, music and dance. The award came with a $200 prize to use toward school supplies and a free book for each student. Her passion comes from her own challenge in overcoming language barriers. Salguero was born in the United States and moved to Mexico when she was in kindergarten. When she returned to the U.S. in the sixth grade, she didn’t understand any English.

Norwalk-La Mirada Scholars to Study Medicine, Engineering, Counseling

Three John Glenn High School graduates will forge paths in medicine, computer engineering and counseling, inspired by being role models to their siblings. Monique Ramos, who earned the most scholarships of all graduating seniors, will study to become a counselor at CSU Fullerton. Kathleen Medrano, who received the Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship, will study computer engineering at UC Irvine. Destiny Enriquez will head to Bethune Cookman University in Florida on a full-ride scholarship for softball. She will study biology and pursue a career in medicine.

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified Teacher Feted for 46 Years of Inspiring Students

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified’s Glazier Elementary proclaimed June 10 as Martha Treadway Day to celebrate the beloved third-grade teacher, who is retiring after 46 years. Glazier planted a tree in her honor and presented testimonials from adoring students, current and former Glazier staff, state and county representatives, and community leaders. Glazier third-graders serenaded Treadway with “Teaching Glazier School” to the tune of the Beach Boy’s “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” while current and former Glazier staff sang “Happy Trails” and spelled out her name in big cardboard letters. Norwalk-La Mirada Jump Ropers Raise $28,000 for Heart Association

Norwalk-La Mirada students raised nearly $28,000 this year through the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart program. Twelve NLMUSD elementary schools and four middle schools took part. Escalona Elementary School principal Bonnie Lytle accepted an award of appreciation from the AHA for Escalona’s efforts in raising over $11,000 during a February event. All donations go to cardiovascular research and programs.
