  • Whittier Union Board Appoints Armando Urteaga to Trustee Area 5 Seat

    The Whittier Union High School District Board of Trustees unanimously appointed Whittier resident Armando Urteaga to serve as Trustee for Area 5 following a Special Board Meeting on Jan. 17. Urteaga will serve the remainder of the term through November 2026. The appointment followed interviews with six candidates conducted during the special meeting. After interviews and deliberation in open session, the Board selected Urteaga based on his extensive experience in public education and long-standing service to local school communities. Urteaga has been a resident of the Whittier area for 25 years and is a longtime public education leader with more than 30 years of experience serving students and families. He holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from California State University, Los Angeles, and a master’s degree in educational management and school administration from the University of La Verne.

  • Whittier Union to Interview Seven Candidates to Fill Board of Trustees Vacancy

    he Whittier Union Board of Trustees will begin its process to fill the vacancy in Trustee Area 5 when it conducts interviews of seven eligible Whittier residents who seek a provisional appointment to the Board during a special Board of Trustees meeting to be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17 in the Whittier Union Board room. Community members are welcome to attend the open session in-person or via webinar to view the process and to participate in public comment prior to the interviews. Whittier Union High Schools Host Homecoming Celebrations

Pioneer High School and Whittier High School staged spirited celebrations honoring students, community, and alumni, hosting Homecoming dances on Sept. 10 and Sept. 18, respectively. Students dressed in formal attire for the dances, where they enjoyed entertainment from local DJs, photo opportunities and dinner meals.

Whittier Union High School District to Host Weekly Vaccine Clinics

Whittier Union High School District, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, will host weekly vaccine clinics for the community. The clinics will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday until December at the District Board Room, 9401 Painter Ave., Whittier, on the Mulberry Drive side. The next scheduled clinic is Wednesday, Oct. 6. Parent consent is required for students under 18 years of age, and those under 14 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Whittier Union to Host COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics for Community

The clinics will be followed by a weekly vaccine clinic, to be held every Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the WUHSD board room, 9401 Painter Ave., Whittier. The weekly clinics will run through December. To register, visit myturn.ca.gov. Those interested in receiving the vaccine may also email covid19vaccine@wuhsd.org with questions or to make a reservation.

Whittier Union High School Celebrates 60 Years of Excellence

Whittier Union’s La Serna High School was vibrantly decorated in red and gold during the school’s 60th anniversary celebration on Sept. 7, which highlighted 60 years of La Serna’s dedication to providing a high-quality education and empowering students to reach their full potential. During the celebration, students and staff received sweet treats and party hats. The festivities will continue during the school’s homecoming football game on Friday, Oct. 15.

Whittier Union High School Welcomes Seniors with Annual Luau

To help students kick off the school year on a high note, Whittier High School's Associated Student Body (ASB) hosted a luau dance for seniors on Aug. 28. Seniors dressed in theme for the dance, where they enjoyed Polynesian food and snow cones, as well as a Polynesian dance performance, an exciting limbo competition and a DJ – all coordinated by ASB.

Whittier Union’s California High School Showcases New Campus Mural

California High School students walked onto campus for the start of the 2021-22 school year on Aug. 12, surprised with a new Condor mural painted by Mark Quintero, a Cal High English and art teacher. Quintero painted the mural as a symbol of Cal High’s strength and endurance, with details throughout the vibrant mural representing a path toward enlightenment and growth. Photos are available.

Whittier Union Hosts Senior Sunrise and Back-to-School Assembly

La Serna High School students gained a glimpse into their school’s culture during a “Welcome to the Kingdom” themed back-to-school assembly, hosted by the Associated Student Body (ASB) on Aug. 18. Inspired by the movie, “Welcome to the Jungle,” each grade level represented an animal returning to their kingdom. In addition to performances by the band and cheer squads, students engaged in activities such as musical chairs. This year’s event was hosted outdoors for the safety of all the students. ASB also hosted a senior sunrise event, where nearly 400 seniors, dressed in pajamas and wrapped in blankets, were treated to a breakfast of donuts and juice.

Whittier Union Hosts Orientation for Freshmen, Sophomores

Freshmen and sophomores across Whittier Union High School District got a jumpstart on the school year through the District’s Frosh/Soph First Day, held at each school site on Aug. 11. Frosh/Soph First Day aims to ease the transition into high school and help students build connections with one another. Events included meet-and-greets with teachers and administrators, a walkthrough of class schedules and campus, a series of games, activities and student performances, and photo opportunities for students and their parents.

Whittier Union Welcomes Nearly 11,000 Students Back to Campuses for the 2021-22 School Year

Nearly 11,000 Whittier Union High School District students made their way onto campuses bedecked in welcome posters and balloons on Aug. 12, where they were greeted by enthusiastic administrators and staff – all eager to kick off the school year. Following a year of remote and hybrid learning, many Whittier Union students beamed with excitement as they made their way to classes for full-time, in-person instruction. Some Whittier Union students are continuing with online learning through the District’s Independent Study Program, i-Sierra. Though the 2021-22 year will more closely resemble a traditional school year, many health protocols are still in place throughout the District to help ensure the safety of students, teachers, staff and families. Such protocols include health screenings and the use of face masks, as well as continued efforts to provide COVID-19 testing and vaccines in partnership with community partners.
