  • Hacienda La Puente Unified Unveils New, Inclusive Playground at Lassalette Elementary with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

    Hacienda La Puente Unified celebrated the grand opening of Lassalette Elementary School’s new inclusive playground with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 18, bringing together HLPUSD administrators and the Trojan community to mark this space where Lassalette students of all abilities can play together. The project, financed by the District’s general fund, was designed to enrich the playground experience for all students with the new space featuring a range of accessible equipment tailored to individuals with physical disabilities. The welcoming outdoor space—designed by the District’s Executive Director of Special Education, Dr. Mayra Helguera—offers a variety of play options, including traditional and wheelchair-accessible swings, slides, sensory play areas, and an inclusive merry-go-round.

  • Hacienda La Puente Unified Recognized for Transformative Learning, C-STEM Excellence at UC Davis Conference

    Hacienda La Puente Unified educators and leadership team showcased the District's innovative work in Computing, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (C-STEM) during a plenary panel at the University of California, Davis's 14th Annual C-STEM Conference on Oct. 4. HLPUSD was recognized with numerous awards at the conference, including Los Altos Elementary School being named a 2024 C-STEM Distinguished School, Sparks Elementary School principal Gilbert Barraza being awarded C-STEM Administrator of the Year, and Sierra Vista Middle School math teacher Kien To being named a C-STEM Teacher of the Year. These achievements underscore the District’s dedication to fostering excellence in STEM education and its commitment to providing students with the tools and opportunities they need to excel in a rapidly advancing technological world.

  • Workman High’s Early College Partnership with Mt. SAC Accelerates Students’ Journeys to College and Career

    Hacienda La Puente Unified’s Workman High School students are accelerating their college and career paths with the Workman Early College Academy Network (WECAN), a program offering free college classes on the high school campus through a partnership with Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC). Now in its third year, the program allows students to earn college credits alongside their high school requirements, enabling them to participate fully in sports, extracurriculars, and their high school experience while progressing toward a college degree.

Hacienda La Puente Unified Fosters Learning with Family Workshops

Hacienda La Puente Unified invited families to participate in the Padres University and Meta Code Remix student and parent workshops, sponsored by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, on March 25. During the event, guest speakers provided parents with resources regarding science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) college and career pathways. The Meta Code Remix student participants received a lively introduction to music production, engineering and coding, designed to foster an interest in STEM careers.

Hacienda La Puente Science Champions Defend Title, Advance to State

Glen A. Wilson High School’s Science Olympiad team competed in 23 science, technology, engineering and math events and ranked first overall against more than 55 Los Angeles County schools during the 2023 Southern California Science Olympiad Regionals, held at Río Hondo College on March 4. Wilson now advances to the state championship, to be held Saturday, April 8 at the California Institute of Technology, 1200 E. California Blvd., Pasadena, and Polytechnic School, 1030 E. California Blvd., Pasadena.

Hacienda La Puente Unified Science Olympiad Champions Successfully Defend Title at Regionals

Glen A. Wilson High School’s Science Olympiad team competed in 23 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) events and ranked first overall against more than 55 Los Angeles County schools during the 2023 Southern California Science Olympiad Regionals at Rio Hondo College on March 4. Students were eager to return to the tournament for their seventh consecutive year, hopeful of defending their 2022 standings. This day-long event is designed to improve the quality of K-12 science education, increase student interest in STEM and celebrate outstanding student achievements.

Hacienda La Puente Unified Students Selected for Leadership Club

Three Hacienda La Puente Unified leadership students have been selected for California State Assemblymember Blanca E. Rubio’s 2023 Young Legislators Program, which enables 32 high school scholars to become acquainted with the state legislative process, enhance leadership skills and participate in various public service projects. Students were selected following a written application process that focused on student leadership experiences and community involvement, skillsets and college and career goals.

Hacienda La Puente Unified Student Leaders, Community Advocates Selected for Young Legislators Program

Three Hacienda La Puente Unified leadership students have been selected for California State Assemblywoman Blanca E. Rubio’s 2023 Young Legislators Program (YLP), which enables 32 high school scholars to become acquainted with the state legislative process, enhance leadership skills and participate in various public service projects. La Puente High School junior students Josiah Hernandez and Cayden Olvera will join returning YLP fellow Glen A. Wilson High School junior Jonathan Chan and other participants in the six-month program, which runs through June 2023. The program consists of monthly in-person learning sessions where participants collaborate with Rubio’s staff, observe the offices of various community services, and travel to Sacramento to better understand potential careers in politics and public service. Chan is an active volunteer on campus and in the community, serving as School Site Council vice-chairperson, a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health student ambassador, Volunteer in Defense of Animals member and more.

Hacienda La Puente Unified Selected for Nutrition Program

Hacienda La Puente Unified Nutrition Services Supervisor Brittney Rodriguez is one of 24 District leaders nationwide selected to participate in the Chef Ann Foundation Healthy School Food Pathway Fellowship program, aiming to empower food leaders to bring more delicious, nutritious and locally-sourced meals to students. The inaugural year-long program, which began Jan. 9, is designed to develop the next generation of school nutrition professionals in scratch-cooking school food operations. Through weekly live-learning sessions, and various networking opportunities, fellows will learn successful ways to serve fresh, healthy and cost-effective meals.

Hacienda La Puente Unified High School Cheer Crowned Champions

La Puente High School's cheerleading and dance squads clinched first place in several categories and outscored roughly 20 teams at the World Class Cheerleading Hollywood Crown Competition on Jan. 28. La Puente High cheer took home two division awards for their dynamic show routine, including division winners and Level 2 champions. The dance company also took first-place in the hip-hop category.

Hacienda La Puente Unified Students Celebrate Lunar New Year

Hacienda La Puente Unified students performed lion and dragon dances, created handmade lanterns and engaged in fun-filled Asian American and Pacific Islander lesson plans as they heralded the Year of the Rabbit with Lunar New Year celebrations and exhibits across the District. Hacienda La Puente Unified will conclude its festivities with a Districtwide Lunar New Year celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3 at the Hacienda Heights Community Center, located at 1234 Valencia Ave, Hacienda Heights.

Hacienda La Puente Unified Celebrates Deep Learning, Innovative Practices During 2023 State of the District

Hacienda La Puente Unified showcased student, staff and District accomplishments and highlighted the various ways it is embracing this year’s theme, “Explore, Learn, Grow: Inspire Deep Learning,” during the eighth annual State of the District event on Jan. 19. Superintendent Dr. Alfonso Jiménez led the presentation in front of a high-spirited audience of distinguished guests, HLPUSD Board members, administrators, staff and community members after two years of hosting the event virtually.

Hacienda La Puente Unified Superintendent Honored for Leadership

Hacienda La Puente Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Alfonso Jiménez has been selected as a 2022 Superintendent to Watch by the National School Public Relations Association, emphasizing his leadership and dedication to students, staff and the District. The annual award is presented to 25 school district leaders who have demonstrated dynamic, fast-paced leadership with strong communication at its core. Dr. Jiménez, who is in his third year as Superintendent for Hacienda La Puente Unified, brings nearly 27 years of expertise in the field to the District.
