    Rosemead High School senior Carmen Ung was in second grade when her father came home with a family gift, a Dell tabletop computer. Ung was immediately fascinated – the way the screen lit up her face, the ability to explore new worlds with a touch of the keypad – she knew right away that technology would change her life. As her computer skills grew rapidly over the next several years, Ung set a goal for herself to become a driving force in the world of tech and use tech to help change lives for underrepresented students in low-income communities – whether through artificial intelligence, software engineering, or computer science. The Ivy League-bound senior is now well on her way to achieving these goals.

  • El Monte Union Breaks Ground on Modernized Rosemead Center for Adult Learners

    l Monte Union High School District broke ground on a transformative modernization of its Rosemead Center Adult Education Complex on April 16, marking a major milestone in its ongoing efforts to expand educational opportunities. The $18 million project—funded by voter-approved Measure HS—will feature a two-story expansion, modern classrooms, upgraded infrastructure, and extensive site improvements to the campus, which houses both the Adult Transition Program (ATP) and El Monte-Rosemead Adult School (EMRAS). Designed to foster independence, skill-building, and academic achievement, the revitalized complex will serve thousands of adult learners annually in the western San Gabriel Valley, including young adults continuing on alternate pathways to a high school diploma.

  • El Monte Union Students Gain Real-World Money Skills During Financial Literacy Fair

    Mountain View High School (MVHS) empowered students to take control of their financial futures during its inaugural Financial Literacy Fair on April 10, an interactive event led by the school’s U.S. Bank student interns, which offered hands-on activities and peer-to-peer lessons in recognition of Financial Literacy Month. Organized by MVHS’ 12 student interns at U.S. Bank, the fair guided students through key financial topics such as budgeting, SMART goals, the 50/30/20 rule, credit cards, and FICO scores. Ten interns presented tri-fold posters with short scripts, engaging students in real-world scenarios and personal finance strategies. Each intern was paired with a U.S. Bank mentor at their station, offering guidance and answering questions throughout the day. The remaining two interns served as emcees, directing attendees to stations and helping the event flow smoothly.

El Monte Union to Hold Public Hearing, Discuss Draft Trustee Area Maps

The El Monte Union High School District Board of Trustees has approved a new round of funding to support a number of facilities improvements at every El Monte Union campus. The modernization program ensures high schools across the District are attractive, safe, in good repair, and support the latest technology. The campus improvements are funded by two voter-supported facilities bonds: the $148 million Measure D, approved in 2008, and the $190 million Measure HS, approved in 2018.

El Monte High School to Host Free Flu Shot Clinic

El Monte Union will host a free walk-up and drive-thru flu shot clinic Saturday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at El Monte High School, 3048 Tyler Ave., El Monte. El Monte Union High School District Celebrates Innovative Teacher of the Year

After only four years of teaching, Mountain View High School instructor John Mann has been named the 2021-22 Teacher of the Year by El Monte Union High School District. Mann’s enthusiasm, dedication and innovation have inspired students in the school’s VISTA Academy to go on to careers in digital communications. One of his achievements has been to provide seniors with access to professional-grade RED cameras and training with industry professionals, as well as access to a full-service production facility and working backlot, where they partner with Mountain View’s drama program to direct and film their own short movies.

El Monte Union Celebrates Mountain View’s 50th Anniversary

El Monte Union students, families and alumni displayed their ‘Viking Pride’ during Mountain View High School’s 50th anniversary celebration on Oct. 15, which brought the community together for an evening of activities and student performances that highlighted the school’s enduring culture of collaboration, inspiration, and achievement. Guy Richard, a member of Mountain View’s first graduating class in 1974, helped to set a tone of gratitude and celebration, reflecting on his Mountain View experience as one that provided a stepping stone to college and career and empowered him to fulfill his dreams.

El Monte Union Unveils 3 Draft Trustee Area Maps, Seeks Public Input

El Monte Union High School District unveiled three initial draft trustee area maps – NDC Green Map, NDC Purple Map and NDC Yellow Map – as it moves forward with shifting from at-large elections to by-trustee area elections. Five school-site community open houses are scheduled for the public to provide input on how the trustee areas are divided. Information will be the same at each session. El Monte Union Seeks Community Input on Trustee Area Maps, District Formation Process

The El Monte Union High School District is inviting the public to provide input on draft maps developed as part of the school district formation process. The District is transitioning from at-large elections to by-trustee area elections to comply with the California Voting Rights Act. Beginning in November 2022, residents will vote for a single Board of Trustees candidate residing in their newly drawn trustee area, comprised of one-fifth of the entire school district. Draft maps are on display at emuhsd-by-area-trustees.com. They will be officially unveiled during a public hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 6. The maps were created by a demographer hired to assist the District in establishing by-trustee area maps according to state and federal legal criteria.

El Monte Union to Hold Public Hearing on Board Election Process

El Monte Union High School District will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 6, as part of the transition to a by-trustee election system. The public hearing will invite public comments and input regarding initial draft trustee area maps and plans drawn by the District’s demographer. The draft maps are on display at the District Office and at https://emuhsd-by-area-trustees.com/maps The hearing will take place in-person at the El Monte Union Board Room located at 3537 Johnson Ave., El Monte and can also be viewed virtually at https://www.emuhsd.org/boardlive.

El Monte Union High School District Encourages Early Voter Registration for Students

El Monte Union High School District inspired students to use their voice and promoted civic engagement during Early Voter Registration events, held on campuses from Sept. 13 to Sept. 24, as part of the state’s High School Voter Education Week. The event was open to all students ages 16 and 17. Throughout the District, information was shared on how to register and when to vote. At Arroyo High School, the Student Advocates for Voter Empowerment club provided access to computers and information during lunch period. Students can also pre-register to vote online by visiting the El Monte Union Voter Registration Information page.

Currently staffed by six teachers and serving more than 250 students, the CEC features state-of-the-art technology allowing students and teachers to connect through formal lessons, as well as tutoring and informal instructional support.
