    Mesa Elementary School fifth-grader Raymond Chen put quick thinking and bravery into action during a life-threatening emergency in a swimming pool, helping save his mother, Jade Chen. Raymond and his mother were swimming in their backyard pool when he heard her scream his name, saw her flail her arms, and begin sinking in the middle of the pool after experiencing a leg cramp. Raymond quickly swam toward her and pushed her to safety at the edge of the pool.

    raweek Middle School and Covina High School offer students a continuous science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) experience through their partnership with Project Lead the Way (PLTW), allowing students to build advanced, career-ready skills from middle school into high school. PLTW is a nonprofit organization that develops hands-on, project-based STEM curricula from elementary through high school. At Traweek, students begin their engineering journey through introductory and advanced PLTW courses that introduce them to concepts including measurement, coding, and mechanisms. Students use these concepts to design and build their own cardboard shoes, measure and launch skimmers, and build and program robots.

South Hills High School Football Coach Resigns

South Hills High School head football coach, Danilo Robinson, resigned his coaching position today. Robinson saw the team through the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, charting a course to keep players safe while returning them to the field.

Northview High School Girls Varsity Tennis Team Wins First-Ever CIF-SS Championship

Northview High School’s girls varsity tennis team was named CIF Southern Section Division 5 champions for the first time in school history after defeating Apple Valley High School 10-8 on Nov. 12. The Vikings entered the playoffs unseeded, but their unranked status did not stop them from making the most of the opportunity. Throughout the playoffs, they reminded themselves of their mantra – refuse to lose.

Covina-Valley Unified Middle Schools Redesignated as 2021 Schools to Watch

All three Covina-Valley Unified middle schools – Las Palmas Middle School, Traweek Middle School and Sierra Vista Middle School – have been recognized as 2021 California Schools to Watch, celebrating their efforts in closing the achievement gap, establishing positive learning environments and infusing technology into every aspect of learning. The middle schools are among 31 high-performing California middle schools to be honored this year. All three schools were re-evaluated to retain their Schools to Watch status.
