Baldwin Park Unified Alumna Hosts Empowerment Workshop
Baldwin Park Unified alumna Emily Solano, a graduate from Baldwin Park High School and licensed social worker, is running a virtual workshop for students ages 13 to 16 who are interested in strengthening their relationships and gaining a deeper understanding of self. Project Elevate is a free program and safe space for students to learn better ways to communicate, recognize red flags in relationships and develop skills to foster strong connections.
Baldwin Park Unified elementary school students received backpacks and school supplies from State Sen. Rubio during a drive-through distribution event at Sierra Vista High School on Sept. 16. Sen. Rubio partnered with Meruelo Enterprises Inc. to provide 250 backpacks and supplies to students.
Baldwin Park Unified served 16,500 breakfasts, lunches and dinners during the start of the 2020-21 school year, with the District’s Nutrition Services expanding its capabilities to ensure all Baldwin Park children under the age of 18 are fed. Meals are served from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays at designated schools where families can pick up meals for all students in the household at one site. Meal service is “Grab & Go” drive-through style, ensuring parents can remain in their cars and limit contact with others. Families receive five days’ worth of breakfasts, lunches and dinners, including a half-gallon of milk and juice.
Baldwin Park Unified Marks September as Attendance Awareness Month
Baldwin Park Unified’s Board of Education has designated September as Attendance Awareness Month for the second consecutive year. To ensure high achievement for all learners, it is imperative that students attend their classes every day. Any families or students in need of assistance related to distance learning, including District devices, technology or personal support, are encouraged to reach out to their respective schools.
Sen. Rubio to Donate 250 Backpacks to Baldwin Park Unified K-6 Students
Baldwin Park Unified elementary school students will receive new backpacks and school supplies from Sen. Susan Rubio during a drive-through distribution even from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Sierra Vista High School, 3600 N. Frazier St., Baldwin Park. The donations will provide 250 backpacks to students in kindergarten through sixth grade from all BPUSD K-6 schools. Students receiving backpacks were identified by the District, with parents notified by email and direct mail of the date, time, and location of the distribution.
Baldwin Park Unified is joining the nation in recognizing Sept. 6 through Sept. 12 as National Suicide Prevention Week to help erase stigmas associated with mental health and raise awareness about suicide prevention. BPUSD built into its distance learning model a designated time on Wednesdays for teachers and students to engage with social-emotional learning, and school psychologists and counselors are checking in with students to provide academic, social and emotional support.
Baldwin Park Unified, Foothill Family to Host Family Wellness Workshop
Baldwin Park Unified is hosting a Family Well-being Workshop for caregivers who want to learn practical tips on how to manage family stress during COVID-19, with the first session in Spanish at 10:30 a.m. and the second session in English at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10 via a WebEx webinar. Foothill Family partners with Baldwin Park Unified to provide mental health support and resources to students, families and staff.
Baldwin Park Unified to Host Online Dual Language Enrollment Meeting
Baldwin Park Unified will present a virtual parent information meeting to learn about the benefits of the District’s award-winning English/Spanish Dual Language Program at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3 via WebEx. Families from Foster, Geddes, Margaret Heath, Tracy and Walnut elementary schools are invited to discover the academic culture of biliteracy and bilingualism starting as early as transitional kindergarten.
Baldwin Park Unified Creates Community Virtual Wellness Center
Baldwin Park Unified launched a virtual Wellness Center for students, staff and parents to provide easy access to a number of mental health and socio-emotional resources for the community, including a Virtual Calming Room. Inspired and adapted from the Sacramento City Unified School District, the Virtual Calming Room is a space for the BPUSD community to learn strategies for processing and managing emotions, as well as activities to de-stress such as yoga, guided meditation and journaling.
Baldwin Park Launches Fall 2020 with Enhanced Learning, Support Services
Baldwin Park Unified kicked off the 2020-21 academic year on Aug. 17 with the District’s enhanced distance learning program, ensuring students receive engaging and supportive instruction through state-mandated remote learning. BPUSD students from elementary to high school received devices and, for families in need of internet, applications to hot spots were provided. Students and families also have access to an array of health and wellness resources, including connections to community mental health agencies.
