BALDWIN PARK – Baldwin Park Unified elementary school students will receive new backpacks and school supplies from State Sen. Susan Rubio during a drive-through distribution event from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Sierra Vista High School, located 3600 N. Frazier St.

The donations will provide 250 backpacks to students in kindergarten through sixth grade from all BPUSD K-6 schools. Students receiving backpacks were identified by the District, with parents notified by email and direct mail of the date, time and location of the distribution.

“The District is grateful to Sen. Rubio for her dedication in championing equity in education for all students,” Superintendent Dr. Froilan Mendoza said. “This donation will help ensure students have the proper supplies to be engaged in distance learning. Thank you to Sen. Rubio and her team for their support.”

Each student will receive a backpack filled with basic school supplies: a spiral notebook, pencil, sharpener, eraser and crayons. K-3 students also will receive a bottle of Elmer’s glue and a plastic pencil box, and students in grades 4-6 students will receive a yellow highlighter and a pencil pouch.

The backpacks and school supply donations have been contributed by Meruelo Enterprises, Inc., a southern California utility and commercial construction contractor.

Sen. Rubio, who represents California’s 22nd District, is a former educator who began her teaching career at Baldwin Park Unified.

“As a public school teacher for 17 years, I understand the importance of students having the necessary school supplies in order to have a successful school year,” Sen. Rubio said. “This upcoming year, more than ever, families are struggling to provide basic necessities. Along with Meruelo Enterprises, I’m grateful to be able to provide these supplies to Baldwin Park students.”
