Monrovia High Showcases Academic Pathways, School Life during Annual Open House

Monrovia High School held its annual Open House on March 21, giving middle school students and their parents their first chance to meet with teachers and student representatives as they consider the fields of study they may pursue in high school. The Open House featured a robotics demonstration, student art show, a performance by the MHS jazz ensemble and a full-dress rehearsal of the school’s upcoming production of “Tarzan the Musical.”

San Gabriel Unified Student Advances to History Day California

Del Mar High School student Sergio Landeros will advance to the National History Day California competition Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 at William Jessup University in Rocklin after earning top honors in the historical performance category at History Day LA. Landeros and his peers from Del Mar were the only continuation school students to compete in the regional competition.

El Monte High School Senior Awarded Sports Scholarship

Each time El Monte High School hurdler Derek Song steps onto the track, he pushes himself to improve on his previous times; however, it is his kindness toward opponents and support for his teammates that earned him the Positive Coaching Alliance’s Triple-Impact Competitor. Song is one of 10 Los Angeles-area high school scholar-athletes to receive the recognition and a $3,000 scholarship from the nationwide nonprofit organization that works to develop better athletes and citizens.

San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High to Host Open House, Arts Expo

Gabrielino High School will host an open house and arts expo from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, highlighting its award-winning visual and performing arts courses, college-preparatory curriculum and career technical education offerings. Fontana Unified to Host Parent Workshops on Community Resources

Fontana Unified School District will hold free Parent University workshops from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, highlighting the district’s community partnerships and resources available to FUSD families. The workshops will be at the Piazza Educational Center, 9680 Citrus Ave., Fontana.

Lynwood Unified Students to Receive New Eyeglasses

Nearly 150 students from Lindbergh and Wilson elementary schools will enjoy clearer outlooks when they receive new eyeglasses from Vision To Learn, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating vision issues as a barrier to education. Vision To Learn will visit Lindbergh, 3300 Cedar Ave., Lynwood at 9 a.m. Monday, March 26. The service will move to Wilson, 11700 School St., Lynwood at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 27.

Lynwood Unified Elementary Students to Perform Original Play

Washington Elementary School students will perform a surprise original work at 6 p.m. Friday, March 23 as part of the District’s Building Relationships and Inspiring Dialogue through Global Exchange (BRIDGE) Theatre Project. BRIDGE inspires youths to explore global solutions through theater productions written and performed by students. The school is at 4225 Sanborn Ave., Lynwood.

Rio Hondo College Trustee Named Woman of the Year

Rio Hondo College Trustee Norma Edith Garcia will be honored as the 22nd state Senate District’s Woman of the Year at 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 27 at the Covina Center for the Performing Arts, 104 N. Citrus Ave., Covina. Garcia is the first woman to serve as chief deputy director of the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department. She co-founded the El Monte Promise Foundation, which creates a cradle-to-college path for area youth.
