San Gabriel Unified Middle School Students Raise Money for Local Families

Four Jefferson Middle School students recently put their project-based learning to use and raised money for families in need. Emily Jacobo, Kimberly Lopez, Jason Veerachaylukana and Joshua Trujillo wrote letters to community businesses during their English class and received $250 in gift cards from Dollar Tree, which will be donated to local families. Monrovia High 21-Year Educator to Be Inducted into Jostens Renaissance Hall of Fame

Paul Dols – a 21-year social science teacher and a 10-year Renaissance coordinator at Monrovia High School – will be inducted into the Jostens Renaissance Hall of Fame for cultivating a positive culture on campus. Dols’ induction was announced May 4 in front of a teary-eyed crowd of his Renaissance students, school administrators, board members and District officials. The induction ceremony will take place at the Jostens Renaissance National Conference this July in Florida.

San Gabriel Unified Music Program Receives National Recognition

Roosevelt Elementary School’s Music Immersion Experience Program received a 2018 SupportMusic Merit Award – awarded by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation – for bolstering young learners’ education with comprehensive music instruction that complements core curriculum. Roosevelt Elementary, which also received the award in 2017, is just one of 135 schools in the country to be honored this year.

Lynwood Unified Names Biomedical Instructor as Teacher of Year

Lynwood High School Biomedical Sciences teacher Deena Smith was named the District’s Teacher of the Year for her ability to challenge students while providing hands-on, practical instruction. Smith leads students through autopsies, and other projects as they explore a range of careers in biomedical sciences. Smith was recognized during a Lynwood Unified Board of Education meeting on May 10.

El Monte Union to Honor Graduates at Commencement Ceremonies

El Monte Union High School District will celebrate graduating students with commencement ceremonies taking place May 30-31. The El Monte-Rosemead Adult School will celebrate students at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 30 at the Rosemead High Auditorium. The following graduations will be held Thursday, May 31: Fernando R. Ledesma High at 5 p.m. at the high school; South El Monte High School at 6 p.m. at SEMHS Eagle Stadium; Arroyo High School at 7 p.m. at AHS Bergstrom Stadium; El Monte High School at 7 p.m. at EMHS Lion Field; Mountain View High School at 7 p.m. at MVHS Viking Stadium; and Rosemead High at 7 p.m. at RHS Panther Field.

Lynwood to Recognize African American Scholars at Awards Dinner

Lynwood Unified will honor college-bound African American students at the African American Advisory Parent Council Scholarship Dinner at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, at the District Office, 11321 Bullis Road, Lynwood. A representative from the office of California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite will speak during the event.

El Monte Union Solar Boat Team Sprints to Victory at MWD Competition

Mountain View High School senior Steven Gov blasted out of the starting gate, steering his team’s solar boat through the current and sprinting 200 meters toward the finish line of a competition designed to introduce students to the ecological benefits of solar power and resource management. Gov’s skillful maneuvering helped the Mountain View Solar Creations Club record an impressive 13th place overall finish during the Metropolitan Water District’s 16th annual Solar Cup – the largest student-based solar-powered boat race in the nation ­– held May 18-20 at Lake Skinner in Temecula Valley.

Baldwin Park Unified Elementary to Celebrate Dual Language Program

Baldwin Park Unified’s Walnut Elementary School will host families at 5 p.m. Friday, May 11 for “Nuestras Raíces,” a celebration of the school’s Dual Language program through songs and dances. The event will conclude with all students presenting flowers to their families while “The World Es Mi Familia” plays in the background. Walnut Elementary School is at 4701 Walnut St., Baldwin Park.

Baldwin Park Unified to Hold Walk/Bike/Roll to School Day

Students from Baldwin Park Unified’s 13 elementary schools will walk and bike to school from 7 to 8 a.m. Thursday, May 10 to raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and to emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The event is a collaboration between the District, the City of Baldwin Park and Bike San Gabriel Valley. The event is designed to build connections between families, schools and the broader community. Students will be eligible to win opportunity drawing prizes that include LED lights and helmets.
