Bassett High will kick off the football season this fall with newly hired football Coach Martin Soto, who is seeking to instill a set of core values that will guide his players toward a high school diploma and set them on a course to be leaders of their community.

Fontana Unified Expands Full-day Kindergarten Offerings in 2018-19

Fontana Unified School District is expanding its early learning program to offer full-day kindergarten at three additional schools in 2018-19. Almond, Mango and Maple elementary schools will offer full-day kindergarten classes for the first time, joining Citrus, Juniper, Sierra Lakes and Tokay elementary schools. El Monte Union Zoo Crew Program Seeks to Engage Students in STEM

Protecting wildlife and preserving natural resources for future generations is the focus of a new architectural design and engineering pathway expected to launch this fall at El Monte Union’s Mountain View High School. The science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program, “Zoo Crew: Engineers Gone Wild,” will allow students the opportunity to study how urban sprawl affects the welfare of animals in the wild. The course will also challenge students to create solutions that promote environmental sustainability while maintaining the delicate balance between developing metropolitan areas and adjoining natural habitats.

Lynwood High School Band to Showcase at SELA Arts Festival

The Lynwood High School band will perform alongside local musical artists at the annual Southeast Los Angeles (SELA) Arts Festival from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 21 at the L.A. River Channel, 5400 Monroe Ave., South Gate. The event celebrates arts and culture in the region, and will include theater, dance and food.

Pioneer High Teacher Continues Legacy of Success with Escalante Summer Math Academy

More than 500 local middle and high school students will celebrate the completion of an accelerated six-week summer math academy, inspired by famous math educator Jaime Escalante, with an end-of-summer ceremony at noon Thursday, July 19. The 28th annual Jaime Escalante Math Academy, held in June and July, offered students the opportunity to take Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Math Analysis, Pre-Calculus or Calculus. Rio Hondo College Professor Attends Exclusive Writing Seminar After Capturing Writing Prize

Rio Hondo College Spanish Professor Mariano Zaro reviewed writing techniques, collaborated with fellow writers and received guidance on his work during the Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing’s 2018 Summer Seminar. Zaro, who serves as co-adviser to Rio Hondo College’s Creative Writing Club, received free tuition and housing for the exclusive weeklong seminar after taking first place in the Institute’s 2018 Writing Contest with a short story titled “Ninamiel/Honeygirl.”

Cal High Summer Program Introduces Incoming Freshmen to High School through 3-week Summer Program

More than 530 incoming freshmen sampled high school life during California High School’s HS 102 course, a three-week summer program during which students participate in a variety of activities that introduce them to the academic and extra-curricular opportunities available on campus. Launched in 2013, the program, which ran from June 11-28, acclimates students as they transition from middle school to high school. It also familiarizes students with school expectations and provides them with the opportunity to earn 2.5 credits for completing the course.

Baldwin Park Unified Adopts New Meeting Agenda Tool

Baldwin Park Unified will leverage cloud-based technology to distribute agendas for its Board of Education meetings, speeding delivery to board and community members and saving time and cost for agenda preparation. The system will be in place for the Board of Education's meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 11. Fontana Unified Honors Parent, Community Volunteers

Fontana Unified School District recently honored nearly 40 parent and community volunteers who spent countless hours advocating on behalf of students during the 2017-18 year.
