Lincoln Elementary School fifth-grader Leonardo Ramirez was appointed the city’s “Kid Mayor” for the month of September during a City Council meeting on Sept. 4. Lynwood Mayor Jose Solache created the “Kid Mayor” program to inspire young people to get involved in public service. Ramirez received $400 toward his college education and will be invited to city-sponsored events during September.
Fontana Unified, Rialto Unified to Offer Workshop on Black Colleges
Fontana Unified School District is partnering with Rialto Unified School District and U-CAN College Fair to offer a parent workshop on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 at Wilmer Carter High School, 2630 N. Linden Ave., Rialto. The workshop will educate parents on the history and the benefits of attending a HBCU, admission requirements and financial aid information.
San Gabriel Unified High School to Host Speech and Debate Tournament

Bonita Unified, Soroptimist International to Host Student Shopping Day
In partnership with Soroptimist International, Bonita Unified will treat more than 70 students in need from the District’s eight elementary schools to a shopping day at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Target, 2462 Foothill Blvd., La Verne. Students will be able to pick out new school clothes and shoes.

Wild Rose is celebrating its renaming to a creative arts school with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, Sept. 7 from 1 to 2 p.m. Wild Rose students will be immersed in a visual and performing arts environment that will expand their creative talents. Paramount Unified Elementary School Familiarizes Parents with Laptops
Paramount Unified’s Raymond Collins Elementary School introduced third- and fourth-grade parents to new technology during a Google Chromebook parent meeting on Aug. 28. Collins teachers and staff presented a tutorial on the laptops to help parents support their children with the devices outside the classroom. District students are receiving the laptops as part of a multi-year technology rollout that will provide every student with an electronic device in grades three through 12 by 2020.
Paramount Unified is offering computer coding curriculum, expanding student access to Google Chromebook laptops and featuring teachers newly certified in Google tools as the District increases access to technology for the 2018-19 school year. The technological tools are funded by the $106 million Measure I, which voters passed in 2016, and which has allowed the District to continually enhance classroom environments.
San Gabriel Unified Continuation School Receives Grant to Fund Field Trips
San Gabriel Unified’s Del Mar High School received a $1,200 grant from the San Gabriel Educational Foundation to fund its cultural and environmental field trip program for 2018-19. Each year, the Del Mar field trip program gives students the opportunity to explore potential career fields and new cultural and environmental experiences they have not seen before.
Fontana Unified School District’s Advanced Placement (AP) test-taking and passing rates reached six-year highs in 2017-18, reflecting a districtwide focus on boosting college readiness. In 2017-18, 56 percent of FUSD students who took an AP test passed one or more exam. The number of students who passed two or more AP exams also increased three percentage points from 2016-17.
