Whittier Union High School District students rang in the holidays, singing traditional songs and holiday favorites as part of the annual Choral Festival on Dec. 5. Choral groups from California, La Serna, Santa Fe and Whittier high schools received evaluation from this year’s adjudicator, Michelle Jensen, an assistant professor at Azusa Pacific University, clinician and conductor of the APU Chamber Singers.

Lynwood Unified Reorganizes Board of Education During Meeting
Lynwood Unified’s Board of Education appointed Gary Hardie Jr. as its new president, Maria Lopez as vice president and Briseida Gonzalez as clerk during its reorganization meeting on Dec. 6. Recently re-elected members Alfonso Morales and Alma-Delia Renteria were sworn in during the meeting and commended for their service by a representative from the office of state Sen. Ricardo Lara.
Fontana Unified School District will hold a tour of Dorothy Grant Elementary – one of its Code to the Future computer science immersion schools – for superintendents and local elected officials from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3. Following a student-led keynote speech, school superintendents and guests will visit classrooms and learn how computer science is integrated into daily instruction at each grade level. Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education (BPACE) instructors Jessica Bayardo and Consuelo Pimentel have received 2018 Excellence Awards from the California Council for Adult Education (CCAE), recognizing their respective contributions as an adult secondary instructor and a childcare provider.
Pioneer High School senior Raylene Cosio has never been one to back down from a challenge – whether it’s running a 26.2-mile marathon, taking a six-week accelerated geometry class or leading the varsity girls’ basketball team to victory. Cosio’s constant resilience is a character trait developed as a result of the adversity she faced growing up, including losing her home on two separate occasions and dealing with difficult family relationships.

Fontana Unified School District students improved their performance on California’s English language arts (ELA) and mathematics tests in 2018, continuing an upward trend and highlighting the District’s ongoing efforts to close achievement gaps.
Bassett Unified middle school students are working with mentors at Citrus College to master engineering skills as part of the 3-2-1 Blast Off! Rocketry program, which runs through March. So far, the students have concluded their first lesson in aerodynamics and launched their first rockets. The program includes training in presentations as well as the hands-on rocketry skills.
