Baldwin Park Unified’s Continuation High School to Launch PBIS Program

Baldwin Park Unified’s North Park Continuation High School will officially launch the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) System to boost academic success, bolster student morale and decrease behavioral issues. The PBIS program emphasizes that students learn acceptable behavioral expectations and reinforces lessons with praise and positive incentives. During the kick-off event, students will participate in group-building activities and reflect on the importance of integrity. The event will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23 at North Park, 4600 N. Bogart Ave., Baldwin Park.

El Monte Union to Showcase Career Tech for Middle School Students

El Monte Union will host a CTE Fair to introduce local middle school students to a host of career technical education pathways available at EMUHSD schools from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23 at the Grace T. Black Auditorium, 130 Tyler Ave., El Monte. Students and parents can learn about pathways in business/finance; engineering; arts/media/design; health care; hospitality and food service; building and construction; transportation; and manufacturing. Students and parents will also have the opportunity to meet CTE teachers from the five comprehensive high schools, local community college representatives and El Monte community business partners.

Monrovia Unified Schools to Host Students from Chinese Sister Schools

Monrovia Unified’s Mayflower and Plymouth elementary schools will host a visit by students from their Chinese sister schools from Tuesday, Jan. 22 to Friday, Jan. 25. Exchange students will participate in all regular school activities and have a chance to interact with teachers and students. Mayflower and Plymouth will host welcome assemblies to kick off the week.

Bonita Unified High School Cheer Team to Compete in State Championships

San Dimas High School’s cheer squad captured the first-place spot in Division 2A at the CIF-SS Traditional Competitive Cheer Championships, held Jan. 12. The team will travel to Costa Mesa to compete in the California State Cheer and Dance Championships on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the OC Fair and Event Center, 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa.

Rio Hondo College to Offer In-depth Look at College Programs at Regional Counselor Breakfast

Rio Hondo College will host about 200 high school counselors from area school districts as well as other local high school officials for its sixth annual Regional Counselor Breakfast at 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18. The event, which runs through 11:30 a.m., will be held in the Campus Inn at Rio Hondo College, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier. This year’s breakfast will focus on the College’s vast array of student service programs, which include financial aid support, transfer and honors, and the Center for Career and Re-Entry Services. Breakout sessions will offer an in-depth look at Rio Hondo College’s academic programs – the business division, communications and languages, and public safety. Counselors will also receive an update on student success measures and the expanded Rio Promise, which offers two years of free tuition to first-time college students. Rio Hondo College is the first community college in Los Angeles County to make such an offer.

Rio Hondo Fire Academy Trains Professional Firefighters in Advanced Techniques, Rescues

Fifty firefighters from across California are hewing their way through structures with axes and chainsaws and carving up cars during an advanced training course this week at Rio Hondo College’s annual Regional Truck Academy. The academy, launched last week, runs through Jan. 18 at the Rio Hondo Fire Training Center, 11400 Greenstone Ave., Santa Fe Springs. Professionals attend a mix of instructional lectures and hands-on exercises, including forcible entry into burning structures, structure ventilation, high-rise operations, elevator rescues, rope rescues, thermal imaging, auto extraction and rapid intervention tactics.

Rio Hondo College to Host Lunar Eclipse Viewing for K-12 Students

Rio Hondo College will host a lunar eclipse viewing party from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20 for students from Whittier City School District, East Whittier School District and South Whittier School District. The event will begin with a welcome, presentations and lectures. Eclipse viewing will begin at 8 p.m. with peak viewing from 8:45 to about 9:45 p.m. On Jan. 20, the sun’s rays will reflect on the surface of the moon, coloring it red – leading to the name “Blood Moon.” Guests should gather at Parking Lot C at Rio Hondo College, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier. The event will be canceled if there is a heavy cloud cover or rain.

El Monte City School District to Compete in Science Olympiad Invitational

Students from El Monte City School District’s Gidley School will showcase their science knowledge at the 2019 Mesa Robles/Wilson High School Science Olympiad Invitational on Saturday, January 19. Gidley School will send 17 seventh- and eighth-grade students to compete against hundreds of area students in the contest, which tests students on science topics that include physiology, astronomy and chemistry.
