Fontana Unified to Provide Parents with Tips on Math and Literacy
Fontana Unified will offer its fifth Parent University workshop of the year, continuing its efforts to boost family engagement in the educational process. The first free session on family math and literacy will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 at the John D. Piazza Center, 9680 Citrus Ave. Translation services will be available.
Clifton Middle School’s Daniela Mazzeo was recognized on court at the Los Angeles Clippers game on Feb. 13 for her dedication to her students. Mazzeo’s instruction and guidance for robotics students have led to multiple awards and recognition for Clifton’s teams. Mazzeo is working to integrate a multi-media element to Clifton’s yearbook program and is building a digital portfolio requirement that will be woven into the school’s core instructional program.
More than 500 Washington Elementary students, parents and staff members gathered on Feb. 5 to celebrate the launch of its Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program, which helps create a positive school setting through strategies that define, teach and support appropriate student behaviors. While Washington is the first San Gabriel Unified school to implement the program fully, Jefferson Middle, Wilson Elementary and Roosevelt Elementary schools also use PBIS strategies on campus.
Durfee School first-graders Jazmin Benitez Ramos and Ella Galdamez-Terriquez said their school’s Spanish dual-immersion program is great for learning and sharing new words – including Galdamez-Terriquez’s favorite word: “florecita,” which means little flower.
“My favorite part of the program is being able to learn new words in Spanish,” Ramos said. “Now I can talk with my teacher and friends in Spanish.”
Dolores Huerta International Academy teacher Malena Peterson was named the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) 2019 Teacher of the Year. Peterson will be honored during the CABE annual conference in Long Beach, held Wednesday, March 20 to Saturday, March 23.
Inglewood Unified to Hold Districtwide Spelling Bee
Inglewood Unified will crown its top spellers in grades 1-12 at the District Spelling Bee at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at the District Office, 401 S Inglewood Ave., Inglewood. Each school hosted a competition earlier this month with the winners advancing to the District final. District winners will advance to compete in the Los Angeles County Spelling Bee on Wednesday, March 13.
San Gabriel Unified Elementary to Hold Leader in Me Family Night
San Gabriel Unified’s Coolidge Elementary will highlight its Leader in Me framework – which teaches students life skills, such as leadership, responsibility, problem-solving, adaptability and communication –at 5:45 p.m. Friday, March 22 during a third and final Leader in Me Family Night. Coolidge Elementary is at 421 N. Mission Drive, San Gabriel.
More than 200 students at San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School learned ways to combat the challenges of mental health disorders during a talk by a psychiatric social worker as part of the school’s Mental Health Day on Feb. 13. Following the presentation, students spent their lunch relaxing with stress-relief coloring activities.
Lynwood Unified to Hold Open Houses for Preschool, TK and Kinder Programs
Lynwood Unified is set to hold open houses at each of its 12 elementary schools to provide information to parents about preschool, transitional kindergarten and kindergarten programs. Lugo and Roosevelt elementary schools will host families at 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, while Mark Twain Elementary will welcome families at 9:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13.
Foster Elementary School students and their parents worked together, using common household items to create and test science-themed devices during the school’s annual science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) night on Jan. 31. National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow Katy Wimberly and UC Irvine graduate physics student Arianna Brown worked with Foster Elementary families to create asteroids using clay, rocks and glass to demonstrate how the solar system was formed.
