Baldwin Park Unified’s Kenmore Elementary and Santa Fe Fundamental School were recognized on May 4 during the Top Schools LA: Leading the Way for Educational Equity conference for strong results in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics proficiency for low-income Latino students in 2017-18. Kenmore and Santa Fe earned the Los Angeles County Top Schools Award for providing high-quality education for all students and successfully narrowing the achievement gap.
More than 50 members of the Monrovia Unified community joined together May 6 to share stories, laughter, and tears as they dedicated a library at the District’s alternative schools to Bruce and Mariellen Staller – volunteers who spent more than 20 years developing and improving the library. The dedication highlighted the duo’s efforts in taking the library of Canyon Oaks High School and Mountain Park School under their wing and enhancing the schools’ literacy programs.
Henry J. Kaiser High School senior Jashandeep Lobana – an accomplished tri-sport athlete, AP scholar and avid volunteer – has been recognized as a 2019 Gates Scholar, one of two in Fontana Unified and among 300 students in the nation to be honored. Lobana’s academic feats have already secured him a $40,000 Edison International scholarship and admission to Johns Hopkins University, where he plans to study neuroscience before attending medical school and pursuing a career in neurosurgery.
San Gabriel Unified School District will launch a Mandarin dual-language immersion (DLI) program in 2019-20, offering students the opportunity to gain intercultural understanding and develop biliteracy and bilingualism in English and Mandarin. The program will start with an inaugural kindergarten class at Wilson Elementary and build upon the success of San Gabriel Unified’s Spanish DLI program, offered at McKinley Elementary. The El Monte Union Board of Trustees will honor LGBTQ Pride Month with a celebration featuring a symbolic pin distribution, raising of a rainbow pride flag and a reception at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 15. The Board of Trustees at its May 1 meeting adopted a resolution recognizing June as LGBTQ Pride Month, celebrating the identities and contributions of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community.
Monrovia Unified’s Computer Science Magnet School to Host Open House
Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet School will host an outdoor open house with the theme “The Greatest Middle School on Earth,” based on the film, “The Greatest Showman,” at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 23. The school is at 148 W. Duarte Road, Monrovia.
El Monte Union to Compete at National Aquatic Engineering Competition
After winning first place in the high school division of the 2019 Los Angeles Regional SeaPerch competition in March, the South El Monte High School Scuba Squad will showcase its underwater robotics skills at a national competition June 1-2 at the University of Maryland. Schools from 31 states, Puerto Rico and New Zealand will compete in the nationals.
West Covina Unified’s Edgewood High School to Hold Grad Walk
Edgewood High School seniors will walk the halls of Orangewood Elementary clad in caps and gowns during the Grad Walk from 8 to 9 a.m. Friday, May 31, giving soon-to-be grads the chance to thank their former teachers and motivate younger students. Orangewood Elementary is at 1440 S. Orange Ave., West Covina.
Gabrielino High ‘Future Leaders’ Advance to National Conference
Fifteen members of San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) program are competing through Tuesday, July 2 at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas. The team advanced after students shined at the FBLA State Leadership Conference.
