Fontana Unified School District renamed Chaparral Elementary School as Chaparral Academy of Technology to celebrate its focus on fostering technological literacy and preparing students for the professional challenges of the future.
Buena Park School District’s Kid Connection summer program provides students with the opportunity to go on field trips, advance math skills and learn about animals such as the bearded dragon and other reptiles during special assemblies.
El Monte City School District Promotes 8th-graders
El Monte City School District celebrated promotion ceremonies for students across the District in June. Gidley School’s Class of 2019 promotion ceremony on June 5 was packed with smiles, applause and cheers for its 166 eighth-graders. That same day, Durfee School’s 169 eighth-graders were treated to a triumphant ceremony, with more than 500 guests sporting noise makers and posters with inspirational messages. On June 4, Rio Hondo School’s 119 eighth-graders were showered with cheers from parents and community members.
West Covina Unified Schools Named to California Honor Roll
Seven West Covina Unified schools were recognized for their efforts to provide equity for every student, earning places on the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE) Honor Roll based on their overall performance on state standardized tests. Edgewood High, West Covina High, Walnut Grove Intermediate, Hollencrest Middle and Merced, Merlinda and Vine elementary schools were named Star Schools.
65 San Gabriel Unified Graduates Earn State Seal of Biliteracy
Sixty-five students from Gabrielino High School’s Class of 2019 earned the California Seal of Biliteracy, recognizing their proficiency in speaking, reading and writing in a foreign language. To earn the state Seal of Biliteracy, graduates must complete four years of high school language courses with a 3.0 GPA; pass a foreign language Advanced Placement exam with a score of 3 or higher or an International Baccalaureate exam with a score of 4 or higher; score 600 or more on the SAT II world language exam; and pass a school district language exam that assesses speaking, reading and writing in a foreign language.
San Gabriel Unified Continuation Students Celebrate Commencement
Thirty-two Del Mar High School students held back tears as families, friends and staff celebrated their accomplishments with raucous cheers during Del Mar’s commencement and awards ceremony on June 6 at Gabrielino High School’s Gary E. Goodson Theatre. All of the continuation school’s 32 graduates have enrolled in college; this is also the first year in which no Del Mar students will return as fifth-year seniors.
Gabrielino High Recognizes 400 Graduates in Class of 2019
San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School highlighted the academic achievements of 400 graduates and reflected on the school’s 25-year history during a ceremony on June 4 at Santa Anita Park. Valedictorian Mason Liu and salutatorian Wei Chi Chen – both AP Scholars with Distinction – were celebrated for their achievements. Liu will study engineering and computer science at UCLA and Chen will study gastroenterology at UC Berkeley. Photos are available
Lynwood Unified Class of 2019 Inspires Students During Senior Walk
Members of Lynwood Unified’s Class of 2019 visited elementary and middle school students during a special Senior Walk on June 11 designed to inspire younger students to pursue their higher education goals. The seniors arrived at campuses dressed in caps and gowns and spoke to young students and visited with teachers and classrooms ahead of their commencement ceremonies.
Presentations, Robotics Highlight El Monte City School District Tech Fair
El Monte City School District students demonstrated their knowledge of technological platforms, computer software and applications during the inaugural EMCSD Tech Fair, held May 30 at Durfee School. Ed Tech Coordinator Jessica Pardini said the fair was created to allow students to display technology used in their classrooms for parents and family members.
Baldwin Park High School incoming freshman Silence Jackson stunned judges and fellow competitors with her documentary “Rebuild this Wall: The Truths of a Triumph Turned Tragic on Black Wall Street,” earning her the Outstanding in State Award for the junior documentary division at the National History Day competition, held in Maryland.
