Baldwin Park Unified Provides Mental Health Training for Student Leaders
Baldwin Park Unified School District – in partnership with the California Department of Education and Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center – will host a National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) High School Training day for student leaders and club advisers from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Baldwin Park Medical Center. NAMI Club members will learn the ins-and-outs of running a club that promotes mental health awareness and combats the stigma of mental illness.
Lynwood Unified to Hold Community Cleanup Event
Lynwood Unified will team with community members to beautify Washington Elementary School from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 21. The school is at 4225 Sanborn Ave., Lynwood.

Buena Park School District’s most well-read third- and fourth-grade students are prepping for the annual Battle of the Books, a competition where students face off to answer trivia questions about novels. The event started as a club for Beatty School’s fourth- through sixth-grade avid readers during the 2012-13 school year by Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) fourth-grade teacher Esther Lee and librarian Kelly Bone to promote literacy and encourage teamwork skills.
Paramount Unified students are receiving new digital tools for launching community-focused businesses and an extra year to hone marketing skills thanks to the addition of a third year to the District’s career technical education (CTE) Entrepreneurship pathway.
Río Hondo College will hold a reception to welcome Superintendent/President Dr. Arturo Reyes at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, celebrating efforts by the newly appointed College leader to champion collaboration and transparency.
Reyes, an educator for 33 years, was appointed Río Hondo College’s 10th superintendent/president in July 2019. He comes to Río Hondo College from Mendocino College, where he held the same post since 2013.
In a ceremony at the 47th Annual Smudge Pot game on Sept. 14, Bonita Unified Superintendent Carl J. Coles and a representative from the Marine Corps presented awards to a senior from each football team for their outstanding academics. Jacob Horne, Bonita Bearcats wide receiver, carries a 4.4 GPA. San Dimas Saints lineman Nicholas “Nicco” Guerra was honored for maintaining a 4.2 GPA, representing San Dimas High at Boys State and serving as a Link Crew member. Both students exemplify Bonita Unified’s focus on academics, athletics, activities and arts.
A Summit High School pilot program designed to support parents as they transition into their first year as high school parents will be used by peer mentoring provider The Boomerang Project to be implemented by high schools across the nation, beginning in 2020-21.
