Monrovia High School Students Learn Job Skills via Coffee Cart Program
Monrovia High School students from the MHS Roasters program don aprons and stock a coffee cart at 7 a.m. to begin selling cups of coffee, tea and hot chocolate to faculty and staff as part of Monrovia High’s WorkAbility and Transition Partnership programs. The programs open doors to job opportunities from local business partners in the community. By going into the community and working for local businesses, students in special education classes learn independence and gain experience for life-skill development. Photos and video are available. Bassett Unified Schools Host Red Ribbon Week
Bassett Unified’s Edgewood Academy and Torch Middle School will recognize Red Ribbon Week from Wednesday, Oct. 23 to Thursday, Oct. 31 with special assemblies and schoolwide initiatives to inform students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Edgewood Academy is at 14135 Fairgrove Ave., La Puente and Torch Middle School is at 751 Vineland Ave., Industry.
Bassett Unified’s Edgewood Academy Plans School Shakeout
Edgewood Academy will hold an earthquake drill at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 as part of the annual Great ShakeOut to show students how to safely take cover during an earthquake. Edgewood Academy is at 14135 Fairgrove Ave., La Puente. The Great ShakeOut is observed by millions of people in earthquake-prone countries around the world each October.
Monrovia Unified School District Board of Education gave an in-depth overview of the District’s mission to provide world-class schools for world-class students before 200 community members during the 2019-20 State of the Schools Address on Oct. 16. The board discussed the District’s teacher and staff support, nurturing at the elementary level, middle school instruction and preparation of students for college and careers. The presentation ended with a video showcasing programs and enrichment opportunities.
West Covina Unified School District will hold its fifth annual District College Fair from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, providing students, families and community members of all ages with resources on the opportunities that await after high school. Nearly 40 colleges, universities and military representatives will offer information about college offerings, admission, enrollment and more. The event, which will also feature breakout sessions on admissions topics, will be at West Covina High School, 1609 E. Cameron Ave., West Covina.
Paramount Unified College Fair to Prepare Students for Higher Education
Approximately 1,000 Paramount Unified K-12 students and their parents will learn how to plan for higher education at the District’s third annual College Fair from 3:30 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Paramount High School’s Senior Campus, 14429 Downey Ave., Paramount. More than 30 colleges will provide information on academic opportunities, financial aid, scholarships and the admission process.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic will offer a free orchestra, chamber music and jazz concert beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at Morningside High School’s Lo Hyman Auditorium, 10500 S. Yukon Ave., Inglewood. The concert will feature the LA Phil, led by Associate Conductor Paolo Bortolameolli, performing works by Richard Wagner, Duke Ellington, Aldemaro Romero, and Leonard Bernstein, plus LA Phil-commissioned works by Gabriela Ortiz and Paul Desenne.
Monrovia Unified to Host Annual College Fair on Sept. 25
Monrovia High School will host its annual college fair from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Monrovia High, 845 W. Colorado Blvd., Monrovia. The college fair allows students and parents to meet with college representatives, who provide information about admission requirements, acceptance rates and college student life.
Bassett High School to Host Events for Suicide Prevention Week
Bassett High School will host activities during Suicide Prevention Week from Tuesday, Sept. 24 to Saturday, Sept. 28 featuring special assemblies and in-class lessons geared toward raising awareness for mental health and the school’s partnership with Pacific Clinics, reminding students that on-campus counselors are one of many resources available to them. El Monte City School District to Host Author Visit
Frank Wright School is hosting a meet-and-greet with Jessie Janowitz, author of “The Donut Fix” and “The Donut King,” at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24. Janowitz will recite excerpts from her books, answer questions about her writing career and encourage students to read more and study hard to ensure high achievement.
