Juniper Elementary School students learned that saying “hello” to a new face at school could be the first step in beginning a lifelong friendship during an assembly commencing Juniper’s “Start With Hello!” Call to Action Week on Sept. 16.
Buena Park School District’s most well-read third- and fourth-grade students are prepping for the annual Battle of the Books, a competition where students face off to answer trivia questions about novels. The event started as a club for Beatty School’s fourth- through sixth-grade avid readers during the 2012-13 school year by Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) fourth-grade teacher Esther Lee and librarian Kelly Bone to promote literacy and encourage teamwork skills.

Río Hondo College will hold a reception to welcome Superintendent/President Dr. Arturo Reyes at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, celebrating efforts by the newly appointed College leader to champion collaboration and transparency.
Reyes, an educator for 33 years, was appointed Río Hondo College’s 10th superintendent/president in July 2019. He comes to Río Hondo College from Mendocino College, where he held the same post since 2013.
In a ceremony at the 47th Annual Smudge Pot game on Sept. 14, Bonita Unified Superintendent Carl J. Coles and a representative from the Marine Corps presented awards to a senior from each football team for their outstanding academics. Jacob Horne, Bonita Bearcats wide receiver, carries a 4.4 GPA. San Dimas Saints lineman Nicholas “Nicco” Guerra was honored for maintaining a 4.2 GPA, representing San Dimas High at Boys State and serving as a Link Crew member. Both students exemplify Bonita Unified’s focus on academics, athletics, activities and arts.
A Summit High School pilot program designed to support parents as they transition into their first year as high school parents will be used by peer mentoring provider The Boomerang Project to be implemented by high schools across the nation, beginning in 2020-21.
Seventeen Fontana Unified schools have been recognized by the California Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Coalition for their efforts to create a positive campus culture and increase student engagement, netting platinum, gold, silver and bronze awards.
El Monte Union High School District will host its annual College Night at El Monte High School on Monday, Sept. 23, providing students and parents the opportunity to meet with college representatives from more than 40 colleges and universities and learn more about the college entrance process. Students from all of the District’s high schools are invited to participate in the event, taking place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at El Monte High School, 3048 Tyler Ave., El Monte.

West Covina Unified’s Early College Academy to Hold Info Session
Mt. SAC Early College Academy will hold a virtual information session at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, providing families with details about the benefits of attending West Covina Unified’s flagship dual-enrollment public high school in 2021-22. Academy students can earn up to two years of college credit and work toward an Associate of Arts degree as they pursue their high school diploma.
