Bonita Unified to Offer Free Conference to Support Parents
The fourth annual Parent Partnership Academy, a free one-day conference for all parents and guardians of Bonita Unified students, will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at Lone Hill Middle School, 700 S. Lone Hill Ave., San Dimas. Over 20 workshops and sessions taught by Bonita Unified educators and local experts will provide training, support and demonstrations on a wide range of topics from classroom technology to individualized services for students with special needs.
Fontana Unified Elementary School to Hold Multicultural Night
Sierra Lakes Elementary School students and families will build relationships and promote intercultural understanding during Multicultural Night, held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 5740 Avenal Place, Fontana. Families will collaborate with the school to create booths – which may feature storytelling, food, dance and art – based on their own countries of origin, backgrounds, beliefs and customs.
El Monte City School District will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of its new 8,552-square-foot Professional Development Center, which will provide teachers with a state-of-the-art learning space to aid them in the creation of innovative instructional materials for District students. The event will feature a musical performance from students in Potrero School’s Mariachi Program and student-led tours of the building from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14. The building, funded through the community-adopted Measure M, will provide three rooms equipped with projectors, podiums and sound systems for training programs. El Monte City School District’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program piloted the use of Lego Robotics in January 2018. When the popularity of the robotics portion of the program surged and earned a second-place project award at the Los Angeles Region FIRST Lego League, the program was expanded to include all students at the start of the 2019-20 school year.
Thousands of Inland Empire students and their parents spoke with college recruiters, filled out college applications and explored career options during the inaugural Inland Empire Regional College Fair, held Sept. 25 at the Ontario Convention Center.
Whittier High School’s historic Vic Lopez Auditorium transformed into a dazzling Hollywood-inspired concert hall when the Los Angeles Philharmonic staged a one night-only, showstopping performance for over 2,000 students and members of the community on Sept. 27.
Henry J. Kaiser High School’s Catamount Pride Band and Color Guard captured second place in its category at the L.A. County Fair on Sept. 20, returning home with a $5,000 prize for its excellence.
Paramount Unified students and families will be inspired to pursue a path to college success when the District hosts its third annual College Fair. Attendees will be greeted by representatives from more than 20 colleges as they receive valuable information to help them plan for higher education. Parents will also take part in a number of workshops that offer expert advice. Topics will include information on academic opportunities, financial aid, scholarships and the college transfer process.
The Buena Park School District hosted 27 guests onto its seven campuses on Sept. 25 for its Principal for a Day. The event provided guests with insight into how each school operates, what students are learning and ways to build partnerships between lawmakers, business owners and educators.
Bassett High School will be one of 15 area schools to partner with the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) to pilot the Community Schools Initiative, a program designed to boost student learning and attendance, school and community engagement, family involvement and academic success. The Community School Initiative will provide Bassett High School with a full-time program specialist to coordinate student services and a full-time educational community worker to coordinate parent engagement for the 2019-20 school year.
