Cypress Elementary will unveil its science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) classroom to the community during its annual Family STEAM Night at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27. Attendees will be welcomed by Spark-E, a robot programmed by students to give greetings and jazz music performed by the Jurupa Hills High School band. The event will feature stations with various family-friendly STEAM activities, including robotics and a mobile planetarium. Cypress Elementary is at 9751 Cypress Ave., Fontana.
Los Angeles Rams Visit Inglewood’s Warren Lane Elementary School
In celebration of Black History Month, members of the Los Angeles Rams organization will visit with students at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Warren Lane Elementary, 2602 W 79th St., Inglewood. Rams members will read “Dear Black Boy” by Martellus Bennett to classes and finish the reading with a pizza party.
Corey School students wowed parents and community members when they transformed themselves into panthers, elephants, monkeys and other inhabitants of the jungles of India during their musical theater performances of “The Jungle Book Kids.” The play, which ran from Feb. 25-27, featured songs from the 1967 Disney animated film “The Jungle Book” about a boy named Mowgli who is beset by the tiger Shere Khan.
Edgewood High School junior Nour Sourakli will spend her summer abroad – studying Spanish language and culture – after earning a Global Navigator Scholarship from CIEE and the International Baccalaureate Organization. Sourakli’s weighted 4.2 GPA, success in Edgewood’s IB Diploma Programme and passion for other cultures helped her score the scholarship, which will help fund four weeks of studying in the Intensive Spanish Language and Culture program in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
When Clifton Middle School’s Hippie Bots robotics students travel to Spain as the sole United States representative at the FIRST Tech Challenge Barcelona Championship on Feb. 27-28, they will continue a tradition of fulfilling the school’s high expectations through commitment and teamwork.
Pendleton School’s new Wellness Center is providing students with a spirited way to connect with others, build a welcoming school atmosphere and exercise responsible behaviors. The Wellness Center contains dozens of games to teach teamwork and boost leadership qualities while advocating the importance of social-emotional growth. A counselor is also available to speak with students four days a week. The center will also be available to students as a reward for exhibiting good conduct and academic achievement.
West Covina High School invites prospective students, families and community members to “1609,” a showcase of the school’s athletics, academics, activities and arts.
Attendees will observe student performances, peruse an art exhibition and meet with teachers, staff and notable alumni. The event will also include food trucks, games and a photo booth.
Whittier High School senior Cristian Rodriguez loves working behind the scenes – whether that’s by providing support as a member of the Vic Lopez Auditorium Technical Crew (ATC) or helping to co-author and publicize his family’s literary projects. Since arriving at Whittier High as a sophomore, Rodriguez has passed four Advanced Placement exams, earned a 4.45 GPA, gained a reputation for his maturity and leadership skills and is poised to be one of the school’s valedictorians.
El Monte City School District invites parents and community members to attend its second annual Tech Fair, which will showcase how students are building Lego robots, learning computer coding and creating with 3D printers. Families are encouraged to learn how technology is used across the District during student- and teacher-led presentations. Guests will participate in opportunity drawings, watch an online chess tournament and enjoy light refreshments courtesy of Durfee School’s culinary arts students.
Inglewood Unified STEAM Academy Hosts Science Fair
Students from Inglewood Unified’s Beulah Payne P-8 STEAM Academy celebrated 100 days of school by conducting science experiments with their classmates, teachers and parents. Students worked together to solve problems and create a finished product. The event also served as a celebration of the school’s emphasis on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).
