To help students kick off the school year on a high note, Whittier High School's Associated Student Body (ASB) hosted a luau dance for seniors on Aug. 28. Seniors dressed in theme for the dance, where they enjoyed Polynesian food and snow cones, as well as a Polynesian dance performance, an exciting limbo competition and a DJ – all coordinated by ASB.
Fontana Unified School District is partnering with Chaffey Joint Union High School District and Rialto Unified School District to host the Inland Empire Regional Virtual College and Career Fair from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16. Students of all ages and their families are invited to attend the free virtual fair, where they can learn about admission requirements and available programs for more than 50 colleges and universities from across the country and gain insight on career opportunities and planning through breakout sessions. Baldwin Park Unified has partnered with BP Medical Center to provide students, staff and the Baldwin Park community with two free COVID-19 vaccine clinics at Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista high schools. The first clinic will be hosted at Sierra Vista High from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 11, followed by the second clinic at Baldwin Park High from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 25. Both sites are open to everyone 12 years and older, and pre-registration is not required; however, it is encouraged to ensure the BP Medical staff has enough supplies. For those vaccinated on Sept. 11 at SVHS, the second dose will be provided from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 2. Those vaccinated on Sept. 25 at BPHS will have access to the second dose from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 16.
Whittier Union High School District, in addition to distributing free breakfast and lunch, launched its Afterschool Supper Meal Service on Sept. 7, providing students the opportunity to pick up free supper meals at each of the District’s five comprehensive high schools Monday through Thursday.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the artwork of Lynwood High School students explored the hopes and frustrations of surviving an era of distance learning, the loss of loved ones, and the displacement of friends and normal routines. The Lynwood Unified artists joined with high school peers in Turkey and Canada to share these images as part of an international online art show, Without Borders: Without Fear, a collaboration between Lynwood High, Robert College in Istanbul, and Bishop Strachan School in Toronto.
The El Monte Union High School District is continuing its efforts to gather community input and boost voter participation as it begins the process of shifting from at-large elections to by-trustee area elections, holding its second in a series of public hearings on Wednesday, Sept. 1. The shift means that instead of residents voting for any board candidate on the ballot within the District’s boundaries, residents will vote for a single candidate residing in their newly drawn trustee-area, usually one-fifth of the entire District. The change will go into effect November 2022.
California High School students walked onto campus for the start of the 2021-22 school year on Aug. 12, surprised with a new Condor mural painted by Mark Quintero, a Cal High English and art teacher. Quintero painted the mural as a symbol of Cal High’s strength and endurance, with details throughout the vibrant mural representing a path toward enlightenment and growth. Photos are available.
La Serna High School students gained a glimpse into their school’s culture during a “Welcome to the Kingdom” themed back-to-school assembly, hosted by the Associated Student Body (ASB) on Aug. 18. Inspired by the movie, “Welcome to the Jungle,” each grade level represented an animal returning to their kingdom. In addition to performances by the band and cheer squads, students engaged in activities such as musical chairs. This year’s event was hosted outdoors for the safety of all the students. ASB also hosted a senior sunrise event, where nearly 400 seniors, dressed in pajamas and wrapped in blankets, were treated to a breakfast of donuts and juice.
Río Hondo College will host a free COVID-19 vaccination clinic for community members ages five and up from noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are available to receive the Pfizer vaccine during this event. 100 doses are available at a first-come, first-serve basis. The clinic is a partnership between the College, Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, Active SGV, Veritas Healthcare and L.A. Care. The clinic will be held in parking lot ‘C’ at Río Hondo College, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier.
El Monte Union High School District partnered with the El Monte Promise Foundation to honor the Class of 2021 with an Aug. 19 ceremony at El Monte High School, celebrating the hanging of graduate banners that will be displayed throughout the cities of El Monte, South El Monte and Rosemead. The event featured speeches from Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga, El Monte Promise Foundation Executive Director Jennifer Cobian, EMUHSD parent Gloria Garcia, and El Monte High School alumnus Joseph Herrera. Banners displaying photos of graduates will be hung from poles throughout the EMUHSD boundaries, honoring the Class of 2021 for their hard work and perseverance.
