El Monte Union High Schools Celebrated in 2021 Best High Schools List

El Monte Union high schools have been listed among the top-performing public high schools in the state and the nation, according to the 2021 Best High Schools rankings by U.S. News and World Report. Arroyo, El Monte, Mountain View, Rosemead and South El Monte high schools earned high rankings among approximately 1,675 high schools in California. El Monte Union’s graduation rate among its five comprehensive high schools is more than 90 percent.

Whittier Union Students Return to Campus Two Days a Week

Whittier Union High School District moved into Stage Three of its reopening plan – with students receiving in-person instruction two days a week – on April 27. Under Stage Three, students are divided into Cohort A and Cohort B, and attend school on Tuesday/Wednesday and Thursday/Fridays, respectively. Students and teachers continue to follow strict health and safety protocols such as participating in a daily health screening, wearing face coverings, social distancing from one another, and following directional signs and floor markers throughout campuses.

Monrovia Unified Senior to Pursue Passion for Game Design at USC

Monrovia High School senior Charlie Heatherly, who has helped build the school’s prestigious game development team Forge Interactive, will take his talents to the next level as he attends USC – home to the top game design program in the country. Forge Interactive works to develop team members that specialize in all aspects of the game design process, with a goal to graduate students who are knowledgeable about the game industry. Heatherly developed his first game, Gossip Inc., as a junior, then brought a team together to design Forge’s first digital game, Red Dungeon.

Fontana Unified to Celebrate Class of 2021 with Outdoor Grad Ceremonies

Fontana Unified School District will bid farewell to the Class of 2021 from Tuesday, June 8 to Thursday, June 10, honoring their achievements with socially distanced commencement ceremonies that allow for lively and safe celebrations. Fontana Unified will honor graduates with modified in-person ceremonies at the San Manuel Stadium, home to the minor-league Inland Empire 66ers baseball team, located at 280 S. E Street, San Bernardino.

Río Hondo College Fire Crew 77 Activated to Assist with Vaccine Distribution

Río Hondo College’s Fire Crew 77 has been deployed to Baltimore, Maryland to assist with COVID-19 vaccine distribution, providing aid to federal officials as they inoculate thousands of citizens against the virus. Fire Crew 77 sent 15 members on the 14-day assignment, which could turn into a 21-day assignment, after being called into action by the United States Forest Service (USFS). During their stay, they will provide logistical support – moving supplies, setting up and disassembling work and mobile vaccine sites and monitoring citizens during their 15-minute post-vaccine observation period.

Fontana Unified’s Summit High School Named a 2021 California Distinguished School

Summit High School has been named a 2021 California Distinguished School, celebrating its success in boosting student achievement, attaining strong graduation rates and fostering college and career readiness. The California Distinguished School award is the state’s top honor for high-achieving schools. Given to 241 middle and high schools this year, the award recognizes schools for their excellent work in closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance.

Fontana Unified’s Sequoia Middle School Redesignated as a 2021 School to Watch

Sequoia Middle School has been recognized in the 2021 California Schools to Watch program, celebrating its continued success in boosting student achievement, creating a positive campus culture, bridging the technology gap and reducing suspensions. Sequoia Middle School is among 31 high-performing California middle schools to be honored this year. First designated as a School to Watch in 2018, Sequoia was re-evaluated to retain the designation – a process that occurs every three years.

Río Hondo College Supports DACA Recipients during Upcoming Annual UndocuScholars Conference

Río Hondo College will welcome undocumented students, Dream Act advocates and civil rights activists, championing its support for a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients, during its 2021 Virtual UndocuScholar Conference on Friday, April 30. With a theme of “Together We Dream,” the UndocuScholar Conference will provide students with resources, advice and encouragement from Río Hondo College administrators, civic leaders and Río Hondo College alumni, focusing on the undocumented experience, the restitution of the Dream Act and the multitude of services for UndocuScholars at Río Hondo College.

Fontana Unified High School Pays Tribute to Former Student with Mural Dedication

A.B. Miller High School Class of 2001 graduate Lourdes Alcaraz was so intent on learning photography that she would spend hours after school in the darkroom perfecting her images. Known to family and friends as “Lulu,” the skills Alcaraz acquired at A.B. Miller led to a successful career as a professional photographer, specializing in weddings and portraiture. Alcaraz was just hitting her stride as a professional when she was diagnosed with cancer and died in 2011. Family and friends gathered at A.B. Miller High’s fine arts building to pay tribute to her, dedicating a mural in Alcaraz’s honor on April 30.

Buena Park School District Teaches Financial Literacy, Inspires Future Investors

Buena Park Middle School students are learning about shorting stocks, buying futures and fiscal responsibility thanks to a stock market game that teaches students about the ins-and-outs of Wall Street and its impact on the economy. Buena Park Middle School math teacher Sean Hamilton is the advisor to 29 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students who are participating in the stock market game, which teaches students about buying and selling stocks to maximize their profits. Hamilton also emphasizes the importance of financial responsibility by teaching students about the benefits of starting a savings account.
