Whittier Union High School District Hosts Weekly Vaccination Clinics in Effort to Combat COVID-19

As part of the District’s commitment to providing healthy and safe learning environments, Whittier Union High School District is encouraging students, teachers, staff and community members to get vaccinated against COVID-19 – an effort supported by its recently launched weekly clinics. The free weekly clinics, hosted at the District office in partnership with Paramount Family Pharmacy under the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH), were established following a successful series of vaccination clinics hosted on WUHSD campuses in late August. Since the launch of the weekly clinics in late September, more than 100 vaccines have been administered to the community.

Fontana Unified CTE Instructor, Carpenter to Appear on CBS Show ‘Tough As Nails’

While Fontana High School’s newest career technical education (CTE) instructor, Lamar Hanger, guides students in developing carpentry skills in the classroom, his own expertise will be showcased across the U.S. on the television show “Tough As Nails” – airing Wednesday, Oct. 6 on CBS. A 32-year member of the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters (SWRCC), Hanger brings versatile experience in construction, welding, metal-stud framing, and lath to his new position at Fontana High School (FOHI). Following a successful teaching stint through the apprenticeship program at SWRCC, Hanger was inspired to bring the union’s existing education program, Career Connections, to Fontana Unified. Career Connections is a CTE program that provides students with a practical STEM education, supported by a state- and District-approved curriculum that features projects and hands-on learning.

El Monte Union Seeks Community Input on Trustee Area Maps, District Formation Process

The El Monte Union High School District is inviting the public to provide input on draft maps developed as part of the school district formation process. The District is transitioning from at-large elections to by-trustee area elections to comply with the California Voting Rights Act. Beginning in November 2022, residents will vote for a single Board of Trustees candidate residing in their newly drawn trustee area, comprised of one-fifth of the entire school district. Draft maps are on display at emuhsd-by-area-trustees.com. They will be officially unveiled during a public hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 6. The maps were created by a demographer hired to assist the District in establishing by-trustee area maps according to state and federal legal criteria.

Baldwin Park Unified Board Selects 2021-22 Student Representatives

Baldwin Park Unified has appointed three standout students to serve as its 2021-22 Board of Education representatives: Nhi Doan from Baldwin Park High School, Aireon Bonilla from North Park High School, and Francis Arguien from Sierra Vista High School. The new student representatives were introduced by Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza during the Sept. 28 board meeting.

Lynwood Unified to Host State of the District

Lynwood Unified will highlight the District’s many successes over the past year and present plans for its future during the State of the District at 8 a.m., Friday, Oct. 8, at the District office, 11321 Bullis Rd., Lynwood. The event will also be streamed on LUSD’s Facebook live

El Monte Union to Hold Public Hearing on Board Election Process

El Monte Union High School District will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 6, as part of the transition to a by-trustee election system. The public hearing will invite public comments and input regarding initial draft trustee area maps and plans drawn by the District’s demographer. The draft maps are on display at the District Office and at https://emuhsd-by-area-trustees.com/maps The hearing will take place in-person at the El Monte Union Board Room located at 3537 Johnson Ave., El Monte and can also be viewed virtually at https://www.emuhsd.org/boardlive.

Baldwin Park Unified Offers Free COVID Testing to Students, Staff

Baldwin Park Unified is now offering free COVID-19 testing to its employees and students, every Monday and Wednesday through December. The next scheduled testing clinics will be held 1 to 5 p.m., Monday, Oct. 11, and 8 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, Oct. 13 at Baldwin Park High School, 3900 N. Puente Ave., Baldwin Park; and 8 a.m. to noon, Monday, Oct. 11 and 1 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Sierra Vista High School, 3600 N. Frazier St., Baldwin Park.

Whittier Union High School Student Uses Coding Skills to Build Interactive Game

California High School senior Justin Toyoshiba was struck with inspiration as he watched shopping shift online and home deliveries increase during the COVID-19 pandemic. Equipped with coding skills developed in Cal High’s Advanced Placement computer science class, Toyoshiba designed Delivery Blitz, an interactive game that challenges players to complete an abundance of deliveries while overcoming obstacles along the way. The app, which was brainstormed and developed over the course of six months, has become a hit amongst Toyoshiba’s peers. Delivery Blitz is available for download through the app store for iOS devices.

Buena Park School District Shows Gratitude to Community Partners

Buena Park School District and the Board of Education paid tribute to five of its community partners, celebrating the programs, resources and assistance each has provided to students and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic. The District recognized the Buena Park Police Department for campus safety and resources, the Boys & Girls Club of Buena Park for providing support to socio-economically disadvantaged students, St. Jude Medical Center for mental and physical wellness assistance, the Jain Center of Southern California for supplying Chromebooks for at-home learning and Simpson Buick GMC of Buena Park for gifting more than 3,000 backpacks and supplies to students. Baldwin Park Unified Provides COVID-19 Resources, Vaccine Opportunities

Baldwin Park Unified continues to offer vaccination opportunities and resources to students, staff, and the community, in an effort to guard individuals against the effects of COVID-19. As of Sept. 28, two-thirds of Baldwin Park students are fully vaccinated. The District has also made a continuous effort to provide updates for parents and staff on new cases through their dashboard, which is updated weekly.
