    Rosemead High School senior Carmen Ung was in second grade when her father came home with a family gift, a Dell tabletop computer. Ung was immediately fascinated – the way the screen lit up her face, the ability to explore new worlds with a touch of the keypad – she knew right away that technology would change her life. As her computer skills grew rapidly over the next several years, Ung set a goal for herself to become a driving force in the world of tech and use tech to help change lives for underrepresented students in low-income communities – whether through artificial intelligence, software engineering, or computer science. The Ivy League-bound senior is now well on her way to achieving these goals.

  • El Monte Union Breaks Ground on Modernized Rosemead Center for Adult Learners

    l Monte Union High School District broke ground on a transformative modernization of its Rosemead Center Adult Education Complex on April 16, marking a major milestone in its ongoing efforts to expand educational opportunities. The $18 million project—funded by voter-approved Measure HS—will feature a two-story expansion, modern classrooms, upgraded infrastructure, and extensive site improvements to the campus, which houses both the Adult Transition Program (ATP) and El Monte-Rosemead Adult School (EMRAS). Designed to foster independence, skill-building, and academic achievement, the revitalized complex will serve thousands of adult learners annually in the western San Gabriel Valley, including young adults continuing on alternate pathways to a high school diploma.

  • El Monte Union Students Gain Real-World Money Skills During Financial Literacy Fair

    Mountain View High School (MVHS) empowered students to take control of their financial futures during its inaugural Financial Literacy Fair on April 10, an interactive event led by the school’s U.S. Bank student interns, which offered hands-on activities and peer-to-peer lessons in recognition of Financial Literacy Month. Organized by MVHS’ 12 student interns at U.S. Bank, the fair guided students through key financial topics such as budgeting, SMART goals, the 50/30/20 rule, credit cards, and FICO scores. Ten interns presented tri-fold posters with short scripts, engaging students in real-world scenarios and personal finance strategies. Each intern was paired with a U.S. Bank mentor at their station, offering guidance and answering questions throughout the day. The remaining two interns served as emcees, directing attendees to stations and helping the event flow smoothly.

El Monte Union to Host In-Person Graduation Ceremonies

The El Monte Union High School District will host in-person commencement ceremonies for all six high schools beginning with Fernando R. Ledesma High School at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 3 on the FRLHS campus. Arroyo, El Monte, Mountain View and So. El Monte High School commencement ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 3 at their respective campuses. Rosemead High School’s ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, June 4 at the Arroyo High School stadium. All ceremonies celebrating the Class of 2021 are ticketed events and will practice social distancing. All attendees are required to wear masks.

El Monte Union Students Ranked Nationally in Wrestling

Arroyo High School juniors Brianna and Emilie Gonzalez have been ranked by Team USA and USA Wrestling on the National Girls High School Rankings List, with Brianna Gonzalez ranked #1 and Emilie Gonzalez ranked #10 out of 25 girls in the 100 pounds category.

El Monte Union Senior Selected as 2021 Edison Scholar

South El Monte High School senior Vanessa Amezcua has been selected as a 2021 Edison Scholar, thanks to her activism within her own community and at school. Amezcua wants to effect change that will improve the environment surrounding under-resourced communities. After graduation, Amezcua plans to attend college and major in environmental science.

El Monte Union to Host Information Session Regarding By-Trustee Area Elections

The El Monte Union High School District will launch a series of public meetings to gather community input as it begins the process of shifting from at-large elections to by-trustee area elections. The transition means that residents will vote for a single candidate residing in their newly drawn trustee-area, usually one-fifth of the entire district, instead of voting for any board candidate on the ballot within the El Monte Union District boundaries. The change will go into effect November 2022. The process will be divided into two parts. First, the District will initiate a community information program beginning in May, which will share details about the transition through postcards, a website and community meetings held in the morning and in the evening Thursday, May 13.

El Monte Union High Schools Celebrated in 2021 Best High Schools List

El Monte Union high schools have been listed among the top-performing public high schools in the state and the nation, according to the 2021 Best High Schools rankings by U.S. News and World Report. Arroyo, El Monte, Mountain View, Rosemead and South El Monte high schools earned high rankings among approximately 1,675 high schools in California. El Monte Union’s graduation rate among its five comprehensive high schools is more than 90 percent.

El Monte Union Recognized as Gold Tier San Gabriel Valley Energy Champion

El Monte Union High School District has received the San Gabriel Valley Energy Champion award and achieved gold tier status for outstanding efforts and dedication to maximizing energy efficiency, becoming the first district in the San Gabriel Valley to earn the recognition. El Monte Union received the recognition in December 2020 and was officially recognized during the April 14 Board of Trustees meeting by the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments.

El Monte Union Eases Graduation Requirements for Class of 2021

El Monte Union High School District’s Board of Trustees voted to adjust the graduation requirements for the Class of 2021, easing the path for seniors who have struggled to complete their schoolwork since the introduction of distance learning in March 2020. The credit requirements for graduation will be reduced from 220 to 190 and students will have until Aug. 15 to complete their coursework.

EMUHSD Kicks-Off $9.8 Million Grant for Clean Mobility Project

El Monte Union High School District has been awarded a $9.8 million grant by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to fund a menu of Clean Mobility measures to promote the use of zero-emission vehicles and clean transportation options for students, parents and staff with the added benefit of a pilot Career Technical Education (CTE) curriculum to engage students in clean energy career pathways. CARB awarded grants for the new two-year Clean Mobility in Schools Pilot Project, which is a part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health and the environment.

El Monte Union Fosters Community Engagement in 25th Annual Parent Involvement Academy

More than 150 El Monte Union High School District parents received guidance on how best to support their children during distance learning, as well as advice on how the children can be successful in school during the 25th Annual Parent Involvement Academy (PIA) – held virtually this year. Celebrating its silver anniversary, the PIA offered multi-lingual workshops focusing on social-emotional support, planning for college and providing resources for students with special needs. Parents received a certificate of participation from Superintendent Dr. Edward A. Zuniga on March 18.

El Monte Union Partners with L.A. Children’s Hospital to Provide COVID-19 Vaccine to Community

El Monte Union High School District is partnering with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to provide the COVID-19 vaccine to community members ages 16 and up through drive-thru clinics. Additional clinics are being held Saturday, May 8, with second doses to be administered Saturday, May 29 at South El Monte High, 1001 Durfee Ave., South El Monte. The clinics will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Photos are available.
