  • El Monte Union Students Chosen to Join L.A. County Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council

    Four El Monte Union students have been selected from a competitive pool of applicants to serve on the 2024-25 Los Angeles County Superintendent Dr. Debra Duardo’s Student Advisory Council, providing them with a leadership platform to engage in meaningful conversations on critical issues in public education. Rosemead High School (RHS) senior Alexis DiPrima, junior Van Do, and Mountain View High School (MVHS) junior Alejandro Dena and sophomore Noah Reyes have joined fellow student leaders across Los Angeles County public high schools on the council. The group meets virtually every quarter throughout the 2024-25 school year to discuss and influence decisions on key educational topics, including educational equity, student well-being, and the overall quality of our schools.

  • El Monte Union Student’s Día De Los Muertos Art Honored in Tournament of Roses Contest

    For El Monte High School (EMHS) junior and art student Michelle Garcia, Día de los Muertos is a holiday to be celebrated with vibrant colors, a special day when family and friends come together to pay tribute to loved ones, and a sacred observance rich with symbolism and traditions that evoke happiness and memories of the past. To honor Día de los Muertos, Garcia created an artwork bursting with radiant imagination, communicating the delicate dance between life and death. The piece features brightly lit marigolds, a dapper calavera in a flower-lined sombrero, nostalgic Lotería cards, and the mysterious, watchful gaze of the Día de los Muertos icon, La Catrina. Garcia’s captivating art was honored by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, winning first place in the fifth annual Día de los Muertos Art Competition, in the 14 to 18 age group. Along with the recognition, Garcia received a $2,000 scholarship, presented in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles. Her work can be viewed online.

  • El Monte Union Celebrates Groundbreaking of State-of-the-Art Track and Field Facility

    Excitement filled the air as El Monte High School (EMHS) students ran through the school’s iconic inflatable Lion tunnel to kick off a groundbreaking celebration commemorating the start of construction on the school’s new track and field facility on Oct. 30. The project will provide EMHS with a modernized track and field facility, made possible by El Monte Union High School District’s (EMUHSD) Measure D and HS funds. Expected to be completed by May 2025, the new athletic space will feature a synthetic track and field, a state-of-the-art scoreboard, and various site improvements, reflecting the District’s commitment to creating versatile spaces that empower students to strive for excellence in both athletics and academic performance.

El Monte Union Hosts Groundbreaking for Rosemead High Track & Field

El Monte Union High School District held a socially distanced groundbreaking ceremony at Rosemead High School on March 25, with administrators and staff cheerfully celebrating the launch of construction for the school’s new track and field. The project, which features a new synthetic football field and repairs to the rubberized track, is expected to be completed in July 2021.

El Monte Union High School District invites you to tune-in to a groundbreaking ceremony at Rosemead High School, celebrating the start of renovations and upgrades to the school's track & field and concessions stands. This event will feature speeches, a ceremonial groundbreaking and more. In order to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved, El Monte Union will livestream the groundbreaking ceremony. The ceremony will be held outdoors at Rosemead High School's track & field. This project is funded by EMUHSD Facilities Bond Measures D and HS.

El Monte Union Senior Named to SCSBOA Symphonic Honor Band

Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA), as part of its 2021 All-Southern California High School Honor Symphonic Band. As band president and section leader of the Arroyo Knights Band and Color Guard, Luutuyen leads the group in performances and competitions, greatly enjoying the bonding and togetherness that comes with the band experience. Luutuyen will attend a SCSBOA professional development master class on March 13.

El Monte Union Schools Continue Strong Showings in LACOE Academic Decathlon

El Monte High School senior Oscar Martinez and South El Monte High School senior Marina Limon both joined Academic Decathlon as a way to challenge themselves and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being an AcaDeca team member. As team captains, Martinez and Limon knew that the 2021 Los Angeles County Office of Education competition would be the most challenging yet, since the El Monte Union High School District AcaDeca teams – including those from Mountain View and Arroyo high schools – could not study and sharpen their skills in-person. Instead, what the teams gained was a lesson in teamwork and perseverance.

El Monte Union Students Qualify for Future Business Leaders State Finals

South El Monte and El Monte high school students won a total of 24 awards during the 2021 Future Business Leaders of America Virtual Inland Section Leadership Conference, securing an opportunity to compete in the state finals in April. The winning students demonstrated their excellence in categories including business communication, entrepreneurship, accounting, marketing, management decision making, international business and public speaking.

El Monte Union Expands Dual Enrollment through Partnerships with PCC, LATTC

El Monte Union High School District will expand its dual enrollment program through new partnerships with Pasadena City College (PCC) and Los Angeles Trade Tech College (LATTC), providing students with more opportunities to get a head start on their post-secondary education by earning college credits while concurrently enrolled in high school. Beginning in 2021-22, Rosemead High School will offer a Professional Theater and Stagecraft pathway through PCC, with all courses to be taught at the Rosemead High Auditorium. El Monte, South El Monte and Fernando R. Ledesma high schools will offer a Construction and Carpentry pathway through LATTC. These pathways will be taught at the school sites by PCC and LATTC professors.

El Monte Union High School Earns College Board Female Diversity Award

Arroyo High School was recognized by the College Board with the 2020 Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science Female Diversity Award, one of 831 schools across the United States honored for expanding access to young women in AP Computer Science Principles classes. The award is given to schools that show 50% or higher female exam taker representation in AP computer science courses or have a percentage of female computer science exam takers that meets or exceeds that of the school’s female population.

El Monte Union Teacher Receives Bobby Salcedo Esperanza Award

South El Monte High School math teacher Oscar Castillo was named a 2020 Bobby Salcedo Esperanza Award recipient at the 17th annual Tamalada fundraiser on Dec. 10. The award – named for a respected El Monte Union educator who died in 2009 – is given to outstanding educators who exemplify Salcedo’s tireless commitment to education. The El Monte Union Nutrition Services Department was also recognized at the event, which is sponsored by the El Monte Promise Foundation, for its heroic efforts since the start of the pandemic. Juan Munoz from El Monte City School District and Ruby Huesca from the Mountain View School District were also recognized as Bobby Salcedo Esperanza Award winners.

El Monte Union Celebrates Posada with Tunnel of Lights, Dancing, Tamales

More than 400 families drove through a tunnel of Christmas lights, enjoyed performances by Folklorico dancers, received an authentic tamale dinner and treats from Santa, including pan dulce, during El Monte Union High School District’s third annual Posada holiday event on Dec. 4. Blending Mexican and American traditions, the District’s Posada offered parents and students the opportunity to gather safely for a night of good food and fun. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Posada was transformed by staff and parent volunteers into a drive-thru parade.
