  • Baldwin Park Unified Students to Compete in District Chess Tournament

    Baldwin Park Unified students grades one through eight will go head-to-head in a District hosted Chess Tournament from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the Elwin Professional Development Center. Over the last 10 weeks, students have studied and practiced the strategies and tactics of chess through Chess Masters, a program available to students in Think Together and available as pilot programs at Geddes and Tracy elementary schools. Trophies will be awarded to the top winners in the following grade levels: first to second; third to fourth; fifth to sixth; and seventh to eighth. Elwin Professional Development Center is located at 13010 Waco St., Baldwin Park.

  • Baldwin Park Unified Students Craft and Learn During Lights on Afterschool

    Kenmore Elementary School students in Baldwin Park Unified’s Think Together program crafted giant piñatas, three-dimensional stars and picture frames with puzzle pieces during the annual Lights On Afterschool event on Oct. 25. Kenmore administrators and Think Together teachers incorporated Halloween festivities, with students dressing up as characters from their favorite movies, TV shows and video games. Lights On Afterschool is a nationwide celebration that highlights the importance of afterschool programs in students’ personal and academic development.

  • Baldwin Park High Football Team Wins Crosstown Showdown, Secures Bell

    Sierra Vista High School’s Jack B. White Stadium was filled with Dons and Braves supporters, dressed in Sierra Vista High School red and black and Baldwin Park High School blue and white, for Baldwin Park Unified’s annual Crosstown Showdown Game on Oct. 20. The night was packed with energetic performances from both high school’s football, cheer, band, and color guard teams. Baldwin Park High ended the game with a strong 26-6 finish, ensuring the Braves will keep the historic community bell for another year.

Baldwin Park Unified Launches ParentSquare for Families

Baldwin Park Unified is launching ParentSquare, a secure, all-in-one tool that will streamline communications with families to keep them more connected to their children’s teachers, schools, and District news. The first phase of the launch will begin Monday, March 21, with all Baldwin Park Unified communications coming from the two-way platform. ParentSquare will be fully implemented at the beginning of the 2022-23 school year.

Baldwin Park Unified Hosts SCSBOA Band, Orchestra Festival

Baldwin Park Unified hosted the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) band and orchestra festival on March 1-2, featuring performances by BPUSD’s middle school string orchestra, symphonic-concert and symphonic bands, BPUSD’s high school wind ensemble and orchestra, and other bands from local districts. The two-day festival included 30-minute performances from 21 bands and orchestras, followed by rigorous judging sessions to evaluate the technical skills of the student musicians. SCSBOA is the largest professional organization that serves music teachers and schools in 11 counties in Southern California.

Baldwin Park Unified High School to Hold Youth Football Camp

Baldwin Park High School will host a free youth football camp from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 5, at 3900 Puente Ave, Baldwin Park. The camp is open to Baldwin Park Unified students in elementary and middle school. Training will be provided by Baldwin Park High School’s football staff and players.

Baldwin Park Unified Senior Wins First Place in NABE Essay Contest

Sierra Vista High School senior Kiara Aparicio was recognized as the high school first-place award winner for the National Association for Bilingual Education's (NABE) 2022 National Essay Writing Contest, earning her a $500 reward, a NABE certificate and the highly coveted NABE Shining Star Trophy. Aparicio presented her award-winning essay to more than 1,000 attendees on Feb. 9 during the annual NABE 2022 Conference and Awards Ceremony, held in New York.

Baldwin Park Unified to Hold Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for Baseball Field

Baldwin Park High School will hold a special ribbon-cutting event at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, to celebrate the official unveiling of the school’s upgraded baseball field during the Brave’s first home game of the season. The ceremony will be followed by the first pitch at 1 p.m. Baldwin Park High is located at 3900 Puente Ave., Baldwin Park.

Baldwin Park Unified, BP Medical Clinic Provide COVID-19 Vaccines

Baldwin Park Unified and BP Medical Clinic are partnering to sponsor a free COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine clinic for students ages five and older from 9 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 29, at Jones Middle School, 14250 E. Merced Ave., Baldwin Park. Booster shots are available for students ages 12 and older.

Baldwin Park Unified Inspires Futures in STEM Through National Program

Fifth-grade students at Tracy Elementary School are receiving letters from archeologists and aerospace engineers through Letters to a Pre-Scientist, a national program that gives students the opportunity to become pen pals with scientists. Tracy Elementary fifth-grade teacher Annette Licata introduced Letters to a Pre-Scientist to encourage her students to interact with scientists and to see themselves as future science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professionals.

Baldwin Park High School Automotive Tech Program Receives Donation

Baldwin Park High School’s automotive technology program received a professional dustless sanding system from education partner and owner of DG Collision Center in Covina, Dan Hansen. Hansen, along with representatives from 3M and Martin Auto Color, hosted a workshop for students on how to use the new equipment in December.

Baldwin Park Unified Students Access Resources through Community Closet

Baldwin Park High School students looking for a new outfit for school or a new notebook for class are finding essential resources through the school’s Community Care Closet initiative, which provides gently used clothes, hygiene products and school supplies at no cost. Partnering with the Los Angeles County Office of Education through its Community Schools Initiative, Baldwin Park High’s Community Care Closet, located in the Family Resource Room, is open every Wednesday from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

Baldwin Park Unified Board of Education Reorganizes Officers

Baldwin Park Unified’s Board of Education held its annual organization meeting on Dec. 14, selecting Betsabel Lara as president and Diana E. Miranda-Dzib as clerk/vice president. This is Lara’s first term as president of the Board, succeeding Board member Christina Lucero. After the reorganization, the District honored Lucero and outgoing clerk/vice president Lara for leading the Board and District during the COVID-19 pandemic.
