San Ysidro School District’s Board of Education has appointed a local businessman who advocates fiscal transparency and integration of classroom technology to fill an open board seat through November 2016.

Local tile contractor Steven Kinney was among four candidates interviewed by the board for the post, which came open Aug. 21.

“Mr. Kinney is a dedicated advocate of our diverse community and is in tune with the multi-dimensional approach needed to effectively reach our students,” SYSD Board of Education President Antonio Martinez said. “As a business owner, Mr. Kinney is aware of the financial prudency required to maintain a fiscally sound budget and develop a strategic, long term financial plan that connects our students to resources they need.”

In his application to the board, Kinney stressed the importance of investing in modern infrastructure – including technological upgrades in classrooms – to provide students with the right tools to succeed.

“The time I’ve spent as a SYSD parent and volunteer has allowed me to interact directly with our students and get to know other parents,” Kinney said. “I have learned what is important to our SYSD community and want to work collaboratively to impact positive changes that champion the needs of our students.”

Kinney will serve as a member until the seat comes up for election in 2016.

“I want to congratulate Mr. Kinney on his appointment and I look forward to continuing to work with our Board of Education to implement rigorous, well-rounded programs, activities and support services that meet the educational needs of our students,” SYSD Superintendent Dr. Julio Fonseca said.
