Follow-up Story: Hundreds of local middle and high school students received certificates on July 17 for their achievements in math. Pioneer’s Math Academy, named after famous math educator Jaime Escalante who died in 2010, offers classes in pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, geometry and math analysis and calculus prep. Participants include seventh- and eighth-grade students and students from Whittier Union’s five comprehensive high schools. Organized each year by Pioneer math teacher Javier Gonzalez, local math teachers and volunteer tutors help make the academy a success. Photos are available.
