REMINDER: Mountain View High School Student Podcast to Host Award-winning Cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz

Mountain View High School’s VISTA student podcast team will host a live event with two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and nationally syndicated cartoonist, Lalo Alcaraz to discuss his new animated short, “Taking a Healthy Ride on the Green Side.” The project focuses on how choosing green transportation options to get to school can improve community health and was produced for the El Monte Union High School District’s (EMUHSD) Clean Mobility in Schools Pilot Project with funding from the California Air Resources Board. It features the voices of EMUHSD students and administrators, which Alcaraz recorded in Mountain View High School’s podcast studio. Alcaraz will discuss the project as well as his work as an artist and illustrator, giving students valuable insight into careers in the creative industries.

Excitement is in the air as Covina-Valley Unified School District prepares to launch its partnership with the Junior Flight Academy (JFA), bringing a groundbreaking aviation/aerospace program to students and ushering in a new era of educational excellence in STEAM education. Gustavo Trujillo, Jr. will serve on behalf of Baldwin Park High School, Lindsey Castro will represent North Park Continuation High School and Valeria Hernandez will serve for Sierra Vista High School.

Lynwood Unified High Schools Ranked Among the Best in U.S.

Firebaugh and Lynwood high schools have been recognized in the 2023-24 Best High School rankings by U.S. News and World Report, celebrating the District’s efforts to establish and expand high-quality college and career preparation programs to ensure students’ long-term personal and academic success. Nearly 18,000 U.S. schools were ranked based on college readiness scores, demographics, state test scores and how well they prepare students for college. Lynwood Unified’s comprehensive high schools earned high national and metro-area rankings, an achievement supported by its various career and academic offerings that inspire students to excel.

Fontana Unified Senior Secures Private Pilot’s License in CTE Pathway

A.B. Miller High School senior Johnny Hortua’s journey to realizing his dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot landed on a pivotal milestone when he secured his private pilot’s license in August. Hortua is the second student in Fontana Unified School District’s aviation career technical education pathway at A.B. Miller to earn his private pilot’s license in high school. Hortua completed flight training school, a pilot training class, airline mechanic class and attained a scholarship that covered the cost of his private pilot's license testing, which can run up to $10,000, from the Tom Wathen Center at Flabob Airport in Jurupa Valley through the A.B. Miller aviation program.

Baldwin Park Unified Middle School Students Inspired by Writer

Baldwin Park Unified students at Sierra Vista Middle School were inspired by author Tom Phillips to pursue their creative talents after an informative visit on Sept. 14, during which students collaborated with Phillips to create a short story through mad-lib style and call-and-answer activities. Phillips discussed overcoming learning disabilities, the process of writing short stories and books series, and how to plot out a story.

Hacienda La Puente Campus Ranked in Top 4% of California Schools

Hacienda La Puente Unified’s Glen A. Wilson High School has been listed among the top-performing public schools in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2023-24 Best High Schools rankings. Glen A. Wilson earned a spot in the top four percent of schools, with more than 17,500 schools ranked. The assessment by U.S. News & World Report shows that Wilson Wildcat students have demonstrated outstanding outcomes in math, reading and science, have a high percentage of students taking and passing Advanced Placement courses, and a 96% graduation rate.

EMUHSD Senior Earns Honorable Eagle Scout Ranking from Boy Scouts of America

Arroyo High School senior Degas Peters, who has an unwavering love for his community, displayed leadership and advocacy for animal rights while creating Project Abbie, a community beneficiary project focusing on building waterproof and insulated cat shelters and housing for stray cats. Peters created the project as part of his community service while working towards the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievable ranking in the Boy Scouts of America. Peters is heavily involved in his campus community, including track and field and cross country, and has forged long-lasting connections with the District staff and teachers who have encouraged and supported him in his journey as a boy scout.

Lynwood High School Basketball Team Earns State Champion Rings

Lynwood High School celebrated the dedication and spirit of the 2022-23 LHS Basketball team with a ring ceremony on Sept. 12, recognizing the student-athletes who conquered the court during the CIF State Division V Championship game in March 2023. During the ceremony, the title-holders unveiled their championship rings to a gym filled with family, friends, alumni and Knight supporters. The event was an emotional conclusion to a season of great achievements and a testament to the team’s teamwork, dedication and heart.

Fontana Unified Partners with Chaffey Joint Union to Host Regional College and Career Fair, HBCU Recruitment Fair

Fontana Unified School District will continue its partnership with Chaffey Joint Union High School District to cohost the annual Regional College and Career Fair and United College Action Network, Inc. (U-CAN) Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Recruitment Fair, which aim to increase awareness of and access to higher education opportunities. Collectively, the events will feature representatives from more than 80 colleges and universities from across the state and country, including Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State San Bernardino, Morehouse College, Pepperdine, Occidental, Spelman College, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and Xavier University of Louisiana. The Regional College and Career Fair is open to K-12 students and families, and the U-CAN HBCU Recruitment Fair is open to high school juniors and seniors; admission is free for both fairs.
