Lynwood Unified families will learn how to use email to connect with teachers during a 21st-century learning workshop at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Abbott Elementary School, 5260 Clark St., Lynwood.
San Gabriel Unified’s special education department will host a family-focused workshop titled “Understanding and Supporting Your Child’s Behavior” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 in the board room of the District office, 408 Junipero Serra Drive, San Gabriel. Family members, teachers and staff who support special needs students will learn strategies for managing behavioral challenges and applying positive reinforcement.
Paramount Unified will hold its final informational meeting about its new STEM high school at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at Odyssey STEM Academy, 3701 Michelson St., Lakewood. The meeting will brief families on the school, which will open in fall with a focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum. Applications will be accepted through Friday, Jan. 19.
Nearly 100 El Monte-Rosemead Adult School students completed their respective programs and celebrated with end-of-year ceremonies in December. A dozen students lit candles and devoted themselves to the care of others with the Nightingale Pledge as part of the vocational nursing program's pinning ceremony on Dec. 15. The program prepares students to take state nursing board exams, which qualify them to work in the field or continue their studies in a college-level registered nursing program. On Dec. 21, 80 English as a Second Language (ESL) students received certificates of completion, providing them the opportunity to pursue a career technical education program at EMRAS or advance in their careers.
Baldwin Park Unified’s Sierra Vista High School has won a NASA-sponsored Regional Challenge Rookie Team Grant that will provide the school’s robotics team with the funds to cover registration for the FIRST Robotics Competition, representing the team’s first time entering such a contest. The grant provides Sierra Vista’s Robodons with $6,000 for competition registration and a robotics kit that includes a base model with frame, controller, gears and motor. Bryant Hong, a junior at Sierra Vista and the robotics club president, applied for the grant.
Fontana Unified School District will hold free Parent University workshops from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, highlighting strategies for promoting health and wellness for the entire family. The workshops will be at the John D. Piazza Educational Center, 9680 Citrus Ave., Fontana. Childcare services for children ages 3 to 11 will be available, as well as translation services. Melody Bradley, a sixth-grader at Paramount Unified’s Frank J. Zamboni Middle School, will be honored for her prolific reading by the Los Angeles Clippers before their game against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The award is part of the team’s Read to Achieve literacy program. Melody logged the most reading minutes among her Zamboni classmates.
Nearly 100 Abbott Elementary School students enjoyed clearer outlooks when they received new eyeglasses on Jan. 19. The service was provided by Vision To Learn, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating vision issues as a barrier to education. Students received eye examinations in fall 2017 to determine if they needed glasses.
Holland Middle School’s robotics team snagged fourth place in the qualifying round of a VEX In The Zone Competition on Jan. 6 – far outpacing its previous performances. The Bulldogs also placed third in the elimination round, edging out experienced magnet and private school teams. This is the first year the Bulldogs have competed in VEX Robotics. The team is on the waiting list for a competition on Saturday, Jan. 13 and will compete on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Grace Brethren Church in Simi Valley.
Michael Tidwell, the newly installed president of the University of Texas at Tyler, still muses on the lessons he learned as a Lynwood Knight, especially from Donald Jones, the school’s former accounting teacher. Tidwell considers Jones a mentor since even though he was never enrolled in his classes, Jones still took the time to provide him with guidance about his future. “Mr. Jones was always so intentional about helping us students think about our future and helping us understand that where we are today is not necessarily where we would be tomorrow,” Tidwell said. “He never let us rest on our laurels and he constantly pushed us to think bigger and better.”
