Rio Hondo College will host about 160 high school counselors from three area school districts as well as officials from other local high schools for its fifth annual Regional Counselor Breakfast at 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19. The event, which runs through 11:30 a.m., will be held in the Rio Café at the Rio Hondo College campus, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier. This year’s breakfast focuses on the College’s effort to support student success, including an effort to guide students along the pathway from high school through college and into careers. Counselors will also receive an update on the Rio Promise, an initiative launched in spring 2017 that covers first-year tuition costs for local high school graduates, as well as presentations about the College’s transfer, honors and STEM programs.
Bassett Unified’s three elementary schools, K-8 academy, middle school and two high schools were recognized as Common Sense Schools for completing lessons on internet safety, privacy and security, relationships and communication, and information literacy. Nueva Vista senior Joshua Almeida, for example, completed a series of digital citizenship and was inspired to write a skit on the consequences of cyberbullying to perform in front of Edgewood Academy students. More than 200 Lynwood Unified African American students were inspired when they connected with successful leaders at the Martin Luther King Jr. “Against All Odds” Leadership Conference on Jan. 19. Young Black Achievers Student Union Members from Firebaugh, Lynwood and Vista high schools were joined by guest panelists as the group explored ways that students can make a positive impact. Ten presenters guided panel discussions, including Lynwood Unified Board of Education Member Gary Hardie as well as YBASU coordinators from each high school.
Baldwin Park Unified’s Kenmore Elementary School has qualified as one of 18 U.S. honor roll schools in the 2018 America’s Best Urban Schools Award given by the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST). The award honors schools in urban areas with high percentages of low-income students that create a thriving academic community. A NCUST team will visit Kenmore in spring and decide whether it will be among those chosen as bronze, silver and gold medal schools.
IRS-certified students from Rio Hondo College will offer income tax return aid for people who earned $54,000 or less in 2017. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 13 at the Rio Hondo Administration of Justice Building, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier.
Nearly 60 Lugo Elementary School third-graders, inspired by talks from Delta Air Lines employees during a Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) celebration on Jan. 11, studied the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and wrote letters thanking the civil rights leader for fighting to obtain racial equality during the 1950s and 60s. Fontana Unified’s Alder Middle School to Host Nutrition Class
Fontana Unified’s Alder Middle School will hold free nutrition classes from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, providing families with tools to learn healthy recipes and plan budget-friendly meals. Pioneer High School senior Sabrina Hawthorne has been accepted to Cornell University, an Ivy League research university in New York where she will study industrial and labor relations, paving the way for her to become a civil rights lawyer. Hawthorne, who has a 4.2 GPA, is the first in her family to attend college and credits her mother for instilling in her the inspiration to believe in herself. She also credits the Pioneer High staff for their support in the classroom and securing financial aid. Hawthorne is captain of both the varsity swim and varsity water polo teams and a member of the volleyball team. She is also in the Pioneer High Leos Club and is founder and president of the Good Eats Health Club and Science Club.
Four Gabrielino High School speech and debate students – Annabelle Cook, Jannelle Dang, Angelina Liang, Jason Tran, Leon Tran, Meng Vong, and co-captains Josh Raymundo and Richelle Chow – were named Academic All-Americans by the National Speech and Debate Association. The award goes to fewer than 500 of the 141,000 association’s student members each year. Students must earn a 3.7 GPA and superior distinction at speech competitions.
