Baldwin Park Unified Instructional Aide Honored for Service to Students

Marie Margarette Rivas, a bilingual instructional aide at Sierra Vista High School, is being honored as the California Association for Bilingual Education’s Para-educator of the Year for going beyond the scope of her job to serve students and improve her community.Rivas, who has worked for the English language learner community for 27 years, will be honored at the CABE Awards Luncheon on Thursday, March 29. She will receive a $500 award. Rivas, who is studying to become a teacher, volunteers to teach literacy classes in a juvenile probation school as well as tutoring students and helping to teach parent education courses at Cal State University, Los Angeles.

Bassett Unified Middle School Donates to Local Shelter

Torch Middle School hosted a celebration for Read Across America and Dr. Seuss’ birthday from Feb. 26 to March 2 to encourage reading and community involvement. In addition to themed activities each day, students brought in donations, including books, socks and toothbrushes for a local women’s and family shelter.

Monrovia Unified Teacher Named Regional Educator of the Year

Lisa Herald, a 14-year history teacher at Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet School, has been named a California League of Middle Schools Educator of the Year for her region for connecting history lessons to student experiences and creating a welcoming environment on campus. Herald assigns hands-on projects that highlight individual learners’ strengths and interests.

Cal State Long Beach Ethnic Studies Exchange Inspires Lynwood Students Considering College

Fifty Lynwood High School Ethnic Studies students spent a day acquainting themselves with college life, receiving advice and encouragement from professors and undergraduates during College Bridge: An Ethnic Studies Exchange, held Feb. 27 at Cal State Long Beach. Lynwood High ethnic studies teacher Ana Orozco, a CSULB graduate, co-founded the Exchange with her former professor, Emily Berquist. Orozco accompanied Lynwood students as they attended workshops, sat in on a class and toured the campus.

Lynwood Middle School Students Receive Free Eyeglasses

Nearly 250 Lynwood Middle School students received new eyeglasses on Feb. 26 from Vision To Learn, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating vision issues. Students were examined earlier this year, and those in need were fitted and given the glasses at no cost to families.

Lynwood Unified Middle School to Hold College Assembly

Lynwood Middle School will celebrate its college-going culture during the school’s annual college assemblies at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 6. Seventh- and eighth-graders – dressed in the gear of their favorite institutions – will enjoy separate assemblies where former Lynwood students will speak about their college experiences. A college fair will be conducted during lunch on campus, 12124 Bullis Road, Lynwood.

Lynwood Unified is set to help parents understand the thought processes of their teenage children and how to connect with them during a workshop from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, in room 203 of the district office, 11321 Bullis Road, Lynwood.

Pioneer High School Alumni Return to Inspire Students to Follow College and Career Goals

Sal Rodriguez, a 1996 graduate from Pioneer High School, returned to his alma mater on March 5 to share with students that his journey to higher education was not a direct line from high school, with trial and error playing a significant role in helping him find his niche in the workforce. Rodriguez was one of more than 50 alumni to take part in the Alumni Career Day, aimed at inspiring students to pursue their college and career aspirations. The speakers included lawyers, firefighters, school psychologists and special effects makeup artists.

Bassett Unified to Showcase Modernized Facilities, Technology

Bassett High School will open its doors to the community from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 3 to showcase modernized facilities and state-of-the-art technology funded by Measure V. The open house will highlight innovative classroom features, including 80-inch touch screen displays, surround-sound audio with wireless microphones and shared classroom sets of iPads and laptops. Bassett High is at 755 Ardilla Ave., La Puente.
