Baldwin Park High School to Host Special Olympics Fundraiser

More than 75 student athletes, coaches and family members from Baldwin Park Unified’s Foster and Pleasant View elementary schools will take part in the fourth annual Ruth Gaskin Memorial 5K Walk staged by the East San Gabriel Valley Special Olympics from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 28 at Baldwin Park High School, 3900 Puente Ave., Baldwin Park. The run is held in memory of Ruth Gaskin, the late area director of the East San Gabriel Valley Special Olympics. All entry fees and donations pledged will benefit Special Olympics athletes from the East San Gabriel Valley, including Baldwin Park.

San Gabriel Unified Elementary School Increases Coding, Robotics Opportunities

More than 20 Washington Elementary fifth-graders laughed and cheered in jubilation as the robots they programmed launched a ball into a cup, an exercise of the computer science and critical thinking skills learned during the school’s coding and robotics club. Running every Thursday since December, the after-school club is part of Washington’s effort to expand coding and robotics lessons to reach more students.

Santa Fe High School Senior’s Quiet Leadership Earns Admiration from Peers, Teachers

Santa Fe High School senior Analyse Garcia has developed an unparalleled drive and profound focus for success. A quiet leader, Garcia’s concentration on academics, community service, athletics and extracurricular activities have earned her respect, recognition and admiration from her peers, school and District. Garcia, who carries a 4.12 GPA and places in the top 5 percent of Santa Fe’s senior class, was recognized by the Whittier Union High School District Board of Trustees with a Certificate of Merit on April 10.

San Gabriel Unified Students Donate Tree to Elementary School

Two Jefferson Middle School students recently donated a Japanese maple tree to Roosevelt Elementary’s garden, driven by the project-based learning unit in their English class. Eighth-graders Yosymar Contreras and Kory Alberto, both former Roosevelt students, worked with a local nursery to complete research on selecting the perfect tree.

Fontana Unified Names 2018 Classified Employee of the Year

Fontana Unified School District named Heather Castillo, senior secretary at Henry J. Kaiser High School, its 2018 Classified Employee of the Year during the April 18 Board of Education meeting. Monrovia High Hosts Roaring Twenties-Themed Special Needs Prom

More than 100 students with special needs from across San Gabriel Valley celebrated at a Roaring Twenties themed prom on May 11, an event hosted by Monrovia High School. Monrovia High leadership students served as paparazzi, giving the red-carpet treatment by snapping photos for students dressed in tuxedos and silk shawls arriving from Monrovia Unified, El Monte Union, San Gabriel Unified, Arcadia Unified, Mountain View and San Marino Unified school districts, representing the West San Gabriel Valley Special Education Local Plan Area.

Baldwin Park Unified High Schools to Host Mental Health Career Panels

Baldwin Park Unified’s two comprehensive high schools will host panels of mental health professionals to explore potential career fields and learn more about resources available on campus and in their community. Each panel will feature a school counselor, school psychologist, a licensed clinical social worker, a licensed marriage and family therapist and a clinical psychologist. Baldwin Park High School will hold its event from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 1 at 3900 N. Puente Ave., Baldwin Park. Sierra Vista High School will hold its event from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 2 at 3600 N. Frazier St., Baldwin Park.

Fontana Unified Middle-Schoolers Compete in Robotics Contest

Students from Wayne Ruble Middle School’s fledgling robotics program will compete in the FIRST Lego League Spring Showdown on Saturday, April 28 at Legoland after winning the Fontana Unified Regional Robotics Championship Cup on April 7. Team C0D3 scored over 260 points at the regional championship and took first place in robot performance and robot design categories.
