Gabrielino High School senior Thomas Chung and Del Mar High School senior Armando Talamantes will serve as San Gabriel Unified’s 2018-19 Governing Board student representatives. Chung and Talamantes were sworn in at the Oct. 9 and Oct. 23 Governing Board meetings, respectively, and will report on the news and events at San Gabriel Unified’s eight schools.
Gabrielino High Student Named Theater Group Student Ambassador
Gabrielino High School stagecraft student Justin Gomez has been accepted into the Center Theatre Group’s Student Ambassador program, which provides Los Angeles County high school students with leadership training, professional development and access to theater and arts events. Gomez is the second Gabrielino student in two years to be accepted into the eight-month internship. He will collaborate with other ambassadors to design special events for peers and teach teens how to advocate for the arts.
Fontana Unified Academy Receives Helpful Honda Gift
Fontana Unified’s Dolores Huerta International Academy received a “Random Act of Helpfulness” from Southern California Honda Dealers Association on Oct. 12. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the dual-language immersion elementary school was gifted new books – in English and Spanish – for its library.
Paramount Unified held its second annual Young Women’s Empowerment Conference on Nov. 3 at the Paramount High School Senior Campus. The event featured guest speakers, entertainment, and workshops that cover mental health, social media, college awareness and other critical topics.
Bassett High School dedicated its special education building on Nov. 2 to Linda Davis, an educator who spent over 30 years at Bassett Unified helping students with special needs transition into college, vocational school or employment. Davis passed away in 2007. The Davis Learning Center will support the District’s Adult Transition program, which is available to all students in the East San Gabriel Valley Special Education Local Plan Area.
La Serna High School student-athletes are enjoying newly renovated athletic fields, including a nine-lane synthetic athletic track, new high jump, long jump, pole vault, discus and shotput areas. The $9.8 million project was completed with Measure W funds. Playing fields will serve a variety of sports, including football, soccer, and track and field.
Baldwin Park Unified Elementary Earns National Urban School Honor
Baldwin Park Unified’s Kenmore Elementary School is being recognized as a silver medal winner in the 2018 America’s Best Urban Schools competition for its success in serving students from ethnic minority populations and low socio-economic households. To receive the honor, all student demographic groups, including English language learners, at the highly diverse campus had to score above state averages on California’s English language arts and math standardized tests. Just four California schools were chosen as medal winners.
Baldwin Park Unified Students, Leaders to Take Part in Annual City Parade
Baldwin Park Unified students, teachers, administrators and Board of Education members will participate in Baldwin Park’s 62nd Anniversary Parade at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3. The parade is themed “Commemorating Community Excellence” and will feature the Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista high school marching bands and color guards. The parade route runs along Baldwin Park Boulevard and conclude at Morgan Park. The grand marshal is Alysha Del Valle, traffic anchor and reporter for NBC 4’s “Today in LA.”
Baldwin Park Unified’s Sierra Vista High to Hold Field Show Tournament
Baldwin Park Unified’s Sierra Vista High School will hold its 32nd annual Field Show Tournament at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Twenty-four marching bands will perform with Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista high schools taking the field at 8:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respectively. An awards ceremony will begin at 9 p.m. Sierra Vista High School is at 3600 Frazier St., Baldwin Park.
Lynwood Elementary School Hosts Families at STEM, College Prep Event
More than 100 Washington Elementary School families engaged in STEM and college prep workshops during a Noche de Ciencias event on Oct. 26 on Washington’s campus. California State University, Long Beach partnered with Washington on the event, which exposed students to fun activities like engineering bridges. Noche de Ciencias is a national program that promotes engagement in STEM among the Hispanic and other underrepresented communities.
