Lynwood Unified School District seniors Alexandra Medina and Brigitte Lopez are breaking barriers as women of color who are looking toward careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. Medina and Lopez are one step closer to fulfilling their dreams of higher education after being named 2024 Gates Foundation Scholars, two of just 750 students across the United States to win the prestigious full-ride scholarship. Medina and Lopez will attend Yale and Stanford universities, respectively. The Gates Scholarship is designed to support students in realizing their full potential.
El Monte High School Senior Receives Full-Ride to Georgetown
El Monte High School senior Nathalie Trigo Lopez is headed to Georgetown University in the fall after receiving a full-ride scholarship from the elite Washington, D.C. institution. Trigo Lopez came to the United States as a freshman in 2020 – at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic – without speaking any English. In the four years since she left her childhood home in Guadalajara, Mexico, Trigo Lopez has not only mastered a new language but excelled academically, demonstrating a level of dedication and perseverance that has earned her a coveted spot at Georgetown. Trigo Lopez plans to major in psychology—a field of study that has captured her interest for the last seven years.
Bonita Unified School District to Honor Accomplished Class of 2024
Bonita Unified School District will conclude a successful academic year by celebrating the achievements of the Class of 2024, which includes graduates headed to Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, and Caltech, during commencement ceremonies for its two comprehensive high schools and continuation school. Chaparral High School will kick off the festivities with a 5 p.m. ceremony on Tuesday, June 4 at the Bonita Center for the Arts, 822 W. Covina Blvd., San Dimas; San Dimas High School will follow with a spirited ceremony at 7 p.m. at the school’s stadium, 800 W. Covina Blvd., San Dimas; and Bonita High School will close out the District’s commencement celebrations with a 7 p.m. ceremony on Thursday, June 6 at Glenn Davis Stadium, 3102 D St., La Verne.
Lynwood Alumni Center to Celebrate Grand Opening with Ribbon-Cutting
The Lynwood Unified community is invited to join the grand opening celebration of the Lynwood Alumni Center – which will serve as a dedicated space for networking, mentorship, educational support and collaboration for current students and graduates – at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 30. The event will feature a ribbon-cutting with leaders from Lynwood Unified and the Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation, live entertainment by the Lynwood High School band, artistic displays showcasing the talents of alumni artists and performers, and catering prepared by Lynwood High School culinary arts students. Guests will also have an opportunity to tour the center. The Alumni Center is located at 11387 Bullis Rd., Lynwood.
Porterville College President Dr. Claudia Lourido-Habib, inspired by her own pivotal experience with a compassionate staff member during college, brought Caring Campus to her school to foster a community where students feel recognized and valued, leading to increased success for all students. The Institute for Evidence-Based Change created Caring Campus to provide college and university staff and faculty with the tools and resources needed to create a welcoming environment for students. By establishing a culture of care on campus, students are empowered to persist and succeed in their educational goals.
The El Monte Union High School District (EMUHSD) will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of Mountain View High School’s (MVHS) Stadium, featuring a new rubberized track and field, bleachers, concession stands and restrooms, upgraded parking, and a grand stadium entrance. Local dignitaries, school officials, students, and community members will be present for the ceremony, which will include student performances, honorary speeches, and complimentary refreshments and food.
Fontana Unified School District’s secondary school music programs demonstrated their prowess at the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) Band & Orchestra Festival, with five school groups earning superior ratings for their talents. Twelve FUSD music ensembles across five schools earned honors at the SCSBOA Band & Orchestra Festival, which took place at Fontana High School, showcasing the exemplary programs that nurture musical talents across the region. Wayne Ruble Middle School’s orchestra secured a unanimous superior rating, while its band was also judged superior. Three Summit High groups – prep orchestra, prep orchestra, and concert band – were named superior, while Almeria Middle School’s orchestra secured superior status.
Hacienda La Puente Unified’s School Attendance Review Board (SARB) has been honored as a Model SARB for initiatives and practices that significantly contribute to reducing chronic absenteeism rates and improving overall student attendance. Hacienda La Puente Unified is one of 23 districts recognized by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond and State SARB for demonstrating outstanding efforts by placing a focus on prevention and positive measures. HLPUSD's achievements were celebrated at the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare and Attendance State Conference on April 26, where the District formally accepted the award.
Fontana High School students in the school’s Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) career technical education (CTE) program handmade more than 100 posters and treated nurses at the Citrus Nursing Center to ice cream, photo opportunities, and a selection of ‘90s music, as they recognized National Nurses Week on May 13 and celebrated the hardworking healthcare professionals of the nursing center. It marked the end of a banner year for FOHI’s CNA program, which achieved outstanding testing pass rates, with a 97% pass rate for overall tests and a 100% pass rate for the skills testing.
