San Gabriel Unified Elementary to Hold Leader in Me Family Night
San Gabriel Unified’s Coolidge Elementary will highlight its Leader in Me framework – which teaches students life skills, such as leadership, responsibility, problem-solving, adaptability and communication –at 5:45 p.m. Friday, March 22 during a third and final Leader in Me Family Night. Coolidge Elementary is at 421 N. Mission Drive, San Gabriel.
More than 200 students at San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School learned ways to combat the challenges of mental health disorders during a talk by a psychiatric social worker as part of the school’s Mental Health Day on Feb. 13. Following the presentation, students spent their lunch relaxing with stress-relief coloring activities.
Lynwood Unified to Hold Open Houses for Preschool, TK and Kinder Programs
Lynwood Unified is set to hold open houses at each of its 12 elementary schools to provide information to parents about preschool, transitional kindergarten and kindergarten programs. Lugo and Roosevelt elementary schools will host families at 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, while Mark Twain Elementary will welcome families at 9:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13.
Foster Elementary School students and their parents worked together, using common household items to create and test science-themed devices during the school’s annual science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) night on Jan. 31. National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow Katy Wimberly and UC Irvine graduate physics student Arianna Brown worked with Foster Elementary families to create asteroids using clay, rocks and glass to demonstrate how the solar system was formed.
Nearly 200 Lynwood Unified African American students received messages of empowerment from professionals and discussed leadership during the 2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Conference on Jan. 29 at Firebaugh High School.
Coolidge Elementary fourth-grader Shannon Yan will represent San Gabriel Unified at the 14th annual Los Angeles County Elementary Spelling Bee at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 at the Almansor Court Event Center in Alhambra.
Rio Hondo College Student Trustee Diana Laureano attended President Trump’s State of the Union speech on Feb. 5 as a guest of U.S. Rep. Linda Sánchez, using the opportunity to continue her advocacy on behalf of her fellow undocumented community members. Laureano, who is studying philosophy and political science and is part of the Rio Hondo College Pathway to Law School program, said she considers it her mission to ensure undocumented residents are seen and heard.
Lynwood High School senior Mark Iniguez knows that the high cost of college can be a barrier for students so he was determined to get a jumpstart by taking college courses and exploring scholarship opportunities. Iniguez’s hard work paid off in a big way on Feb. 1 when he was offered a $92,000 scholarship to Benedict College during the Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) Caravan Tour.
Ten teams from Monrovia Unified will compete in the annual Inter-League Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Monrovia High School, 845 W. Colorado Blvd., Monrovia. Students will control the robots they designed, built and programmed in head-to-head challenges that simulate space rover actions such as landing, mining, sample gathering, and parking. The top-scoring teams will advance to the Los Angeles Regional Championships at Monrovia High School on Saturday, March 9.
Fontana Unified added two electric, zero-emission buses to its fleet that aim to reduce air pollution and transportation energy costs, thanks to funding and support from local and state agencies. Fontana Unified is among 16 school districts across Southern California to receive funding for two electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and two buses. The District’s new EV Blue Bird Type D buses can accommodate up to 72 passengers and travel 100 to 120 miles on a full charge.
