Lynwood Unified will host nearly 100 families for workshop sessions that will empower them to become academic partners with their children while celebrating their community engagement at the District’s fifth annual Parent University event. Dr. Maria Covarrubias, an educational leadership coach and Harvard alumnus, will join Monica Garcia, an advisor for the John Hopkins Center for Talented (CTY), along with LUSD staff and parents in presenting workshops that help families guide their children to success. Workshops will be provided in both English and Spanish. Topics will include getting an edge in English and math; the difference between diagnosis and eligibility in special education; and college and career pathways.
LeGore School sixth-grader Frank Rodriguez wore a No. 42 jersey in honor of former Brooklyn Dodger and civil rights pioneer Jackie Robinson as he conducted campus tours for parents and community members during the school’s third annual All-Star Leadership Day on March 22.
Henry J. Kaiser High School senior Jashandeep Lobana – a scientifically curious scholar-athlete and avid volunteer – has been named a 2019 Edison International Scholar, receiving a $40,000 scholarship toward his pursuit of a college degree. Lobana was surprised with the scholarship by his family, Edison representatives, district officials and Kaiser educators during a March 26 ceremony.
Baldwin Park Unified’s Board of Education adopted a pair of resolutions to show support for arts and music education. The District designated March as Music in our Schools Month and Arts Education in California Month, encouraging all students, parents, educators and community members to celebrate and participate in visual and performing arts programs.
Edgewood High School senior Carissa Castro’s hard work in the classroom and passion to improve access to clean water have earned her a $40,000 scholarship from Edison International. Castro, who was surprised by her mom and fellow ASB members during a physics class on March 20, was selected from more than 2,000 applicants to be an Edison Scholar.
El Monte High School held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate renovations to its stadium – including a snack bar, restrooms and bleachers to seat more than 2,000 spectators – on March 20. El Monte High broke ground on the project in 2017. Lion Stadium was renovated to increase seating capacity for spectators to enjoy a broad range of sports, including football, soccer, and track and field, and celebrate student milestones, such as graduation. The site includes new fencing, landscaping, a gate entrance and ticket booth.
Bassett High Girls Learn about Teen Health Issues during Conference
Bassett High School students joined more than 70 teens at the third annual Girls’ Health Rocks! Conference on March 9 to learn about issues surrounding puberty, eating and exercise, and mental health.
Inglewood Unified Launches New District Website
Inglewood Unified has launched a new District website that offers greater insight into student achievement and provides a streamlined navigation system to connect community members to key information. The new site, www.inglewoodusd.com, was a six-month project aimed at highlighting student achievement. The new features will ultimately connect to each of the District’s redesigned school websites.
A.B. Miller High School seniors Maritza Padilla and Gerardo Pena have been named 2019 Dell Scholars, an honor that comes with $20,000 scholarships. Padilla and Pena, who both belong to A.B. Miller’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) college-readiness program, will also receive laptops and textbook credits.
