Baldwin Park High School Wins National Champions of Breakfast Award

Baldwin Park High School’s food and nutrition services recently earned the 2019 Champions of Breakfast Award for implementing innovative serving models and increasing the number of students who eat breakfast on a daily basis by 25 percent. The Champions of Breakfast Awards recognize schools and districts across the country that operate exemplary School Breakfast Programs (SBP).

Rio Hondo College Anticipates 700 for 7th Annual ‘A Taste of Rio’

More than 700 guests are expected to sample artisan cuisine, fine wine and craft beer during the Rio Hondo Foundation’s seventh annual “A Taste of Rio” event at 6 p.m. Friday, April 26 at the College, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier. The event, which supports Rio Hondo student programs and scholarships, will feature more than two dozen local restaurants, music and over 100 opportunity drawings.

Whittier Union Science Students Showcase STEM Skills at District Science Cup

Nearly 100 of Whittier Union High School District’s brightest science students put their knowledge to the test on March 1, when they constructed Rube Goldberg machines, built lamp-powered water heaters, designed and built skeeball catapults and competed in a science quiz bowl during the second annual WUHSD Science Cup. Approximately 20 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) students from each comprehensive high school competed at the Sierra Education Center gym, with Santa Fe High School taking home the top prize: The Science Cup.

Baldwin Park Unified Celebrates Schools, Programs at District Showcase

Baldwin Park Unified students, families, educators, administrators and community members attended the inaugural District Showcase on March 2, learning about how the District prepares students for 21st century careers and highlighting opportunities available to students. The District’s 20 schools, Early Childhood Education and Adult and Community Education displayed their school pride and programs at interactive booths.

San Gabriel Unified Continuation Students to Advance to State History Day

San Gabriel Unified’s Del Mar High School will advance seven students to the History Day California competition, to be held Friday, May 10 to Sunday, May 12, after securing top scores at History Day L.A. on March 9. Del Mar – the only continuation school to compete in the regional competition – swept four categories with projects highlighting redlining, a process of injustice and discrimination that prevented people of color from buying houses.

Lynwood Unified Community, Elected Officials Celebrate PBIS Award

U.S. Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon joined the Lynwood Unified Board of Education and community members on Feb. 22 to celebrate Roosevelt Elementary School earning a Bronze Award for work in its Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program. The program featured remarks from Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite as Roosevelt’s students and PBIS team were recognized for exceptional work in PBIS.

Bonita Unified Celebrates Accomplishments, Goals at State of the District

Bonita Unified Superintendent Carl J. Coles discussed the District’s accomplishments thus far and the goals for the future, during the State of the District on Feb. 26. The event featured a luncheon with families, community leaders and members, local business partners and educators, and student performances by the District’s high school band and middle school choir group. Fontana Unified School Named National AVID Demonstration School

Sequoia Middle School was named an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) National Demonstration School on Feb. 28 and will serve as a model for other schools and districts implementing AVID across the nation. AVID narrows the achievement gap between the lowest- and highest-performing students and encourages more students enroll in four-year colleges.
