Bassett High Students Connect with Community Leaders and College Reps
Students connected with 50 community-based experts, college representatives and industry professionals who shared lessons on soft skills, job success and relationship-building during Bassett High School’s Mentor Expo on March 8.
Paramount Unified School District has been chosen as one of 10 Los Angeles County 2018 model school districts by the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) for its success in lowering rates in chronic absenteeism and truancy.Paramount Unified will present information about the District’s best attendance practices and processes to other districts during a SARB Symposium on May 20 at the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
Fontana Unified High News Broadcast Earns Top Marks at Film Festival
A.B. Miller High School’s Rebel News won first place in the news broadcast category – as well as an audience favorite award – at the New Optics Film Festival on March 16, highlighting the strength of the school’s television production program. A panel of industry professionals judged and awarded the top three videos, submitted by high school students, in five categories.
Whittier Union Student Surprised with $40,000 Edison Scholarship
Pioneer High School senior Ana Cortez was surprised with a $40,000 Edison scholarship while in her AP Chemistry class on March 20, surrounded by friends, classmates and teachers. Cortez is one of 30 Southern California high school students to be named a 2019 Edison Scholar. Cortez plans to major in bio-engineering to prepare for a career creating technological advancements for people with disabilities, including artificial prosthetics at an affordable price.
Monrovia Unified elementary school students participated in the District’s second annual Next Generation Math Bee on April 18, an event that aims to nurture mathematical skills in students. Students enthusiastically solved equations, while at the same time growing a passion for mathematics. After the judges tallied the points, the Mayflower Elementary Mariners were awarded the first-place trophy.
Baldwin Park Unified Students to Compete at State History Day
Seven students from Baldwin Park Unified’s Central Elementary School will advance to the History Day California competition, Friday, May 10 to Sunday, May 12, after they earned top scores at History Day L.A. Sebastian Camacho earned a finalist ribbon for his individual poster on “Discovering King Tut’s Tomb.” Two teams won in the group poster category: Jazleen Guasgua and Amy Hernandez for “Little Rock Nine” and Bryceden Liu, Ellie Perez Monge and Michelle Mora for a project on NASA. Allan Galaviz secured a spot for a D-Day website.
Lynwood Elementary School Students to Give College Presentations
Washington Elementary School students will give presentations on college options for classmates and
families during a College Fair at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, March 28 at the school’s campus, 4225 Sanborn Ave., Lynwood.
Santa Fe High School will host a two-day “Every 15 Minutes” program with a trio of techniques to bring
home the dangers of drinking and driving: a graphic staging of a deadly drunk-driving crash, students
randomly pulled from classes to represent lives lost to drunk driving and a mock funeral service. The
drunk-driving scenario involves firefighters, police and a coroner, as well as students pre-selected from
the school – including one who “dies” and another who is arrested for driving under the influence and
booked into jail. The crash scene will take place at 11:10 a.m. Wednesday, April 3 at Santa Fe High School, 10400 S. Orr & Day Road, Santa Fe Springs. A mock funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4.
Bassett High Health Students to Connect with Peers at State Conference
Bassett High School students interested in health careers will connect with peers and compete in health-themed contests at the 2019 California Health Occupations Students of America Club State Leadership Conference, starting Thursday, March 28 at the Sacramento Convention Center.
Monrovia Unified Celebrates Student Athletes at Olympic Games
More than 400 fourth- and fifth-graders from Monrovia Unified School District’s five elementary schools filled Monrovia High School’s Wildcat Stadium to compete in Olympic-inspired games such as the 100-yard dash and the 4x400 relay during the Elementary Olympic Games on March 28. Student athletes were joined by teachers, District administrators and community members as they participated in the daylong event, which also featured softball throws, jump rope, football punt, long jump, soccer shoot, and partners volleyball.
