Gabrielino High ‘Future Business Leaders’ Advance to State Conference

San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School will send 38 of its Future Business Leaders of America students to the State Leadership Conference, to be held Thursday, April 25 to Sunday, April 28 in Sacramento. All students will explore leadership, college and career workshops, and 17 students will also compete in career-related events.

Monrovia Unified Students take on ‘Lion King Kids’ for Spring Production

Wild Rose School of Creative Arts students will impress the audience with their spring production of Disney’s “Lion King Kids” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 19 at the Louise K. Taylor Performing Arts Center, 845 W. Colorado Blvd., Monrovia. The school is partnering on the production with Center Theatre Group and Disney Musical in Schools. The cast features 50 student actors who will sing and dance to such songs “Circle of Life” and “I Just Can’t Wait to be King.”

West Covina Unified Elementary to Hold Coding and Robotics Expo

Orangewood Elementary School will hold a coding and robotics expo from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4. Students will give families and staff a coding demonstration before squaring off in a friendly robotics competition. Refreshments will be available for purchase from food trucks. Orangewood Elementary is at 1440 S. Orange Ave., West Covina.

Inglewood School to Hold Informational Meeting about Expansion

Beulah Payne Elementary School will hold a parent informational meeting to discuss the school’s expansion to eighth grade this fall. The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 3 at the campus, 215 W. 94th St., Inglewood. Parents will have the opportunity to learn about programs and campus renovations.

Bassett Unified Hosts Winter Sports Celebration

Bassett Unified held a Winter Sports Celebration on March 27 in honor of Bassett High School wrestling, boys and girls basketball, soccer and cheer at Bassett High school. Coaches gave speeches and presentations highlighting student and team achievements along with video footage and athlete interviews. Bassett High School’s Open House was held concurrently.

Santa Fe High Exemplary Student Earns Award of Merit for Leadership

Santa Fe High School senior Maximas Gomez is an exemplary student whose profound drive for success has propelled him to shine as a role model to his peers and teachers alike. After working summer jobs with his father starting at age 5, Gomez has learned the value of time, the cost of necessities and the tireless amount of work it would take to get ahead in school and in life. Those experiences and efforts have resulted in Gomez’s continued success at Santa Fe. He was recently honored by the Whittier Union High School District Board of Trustees with the Award of Merit.

Monrovia Unified Honors 10 Volunteers for Dedication

Ten volunteers were honored for their hard work, dedication and passion for students during Monrovia Unified School District’s Golden Apple Awards on March 25. The ceremony, which began with a breakfast provided by Monrovia’s local chapter of the Association of California School Administrators, highlighted the important role volunteers play across the district.

Paramount High School Student Meets NASCAR Driver, Interviewed on TV

Paramount High School senior Christian Sanchez received a surprise interview in his classroom by Fox 11 on March 28 for a story that profiles his love and knowledge of NASCAR racing. Sanchez, a special education student, was given the chance of a lifetime to meet his favorite driver Daniel Suarez while hanging out on the grounds of the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana during a race on March 17.

San Gabriel Unified Music Programs Receive National Recognition

San Gabriel Unified’s efforts to provide high-quality arts and music instruction at all educational levels have been recognized with a Best Communities for Music Education designation, an award given to just 18 school districts in the state and 623 districts nationwide. The designation is given by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation to school districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students.

Lynwood Unified to Celebrate Families, Community Engagement

Lynwood Unified will host nearly 100 families for workshop sessions that will empower them to become academic partners with their children while celebrating their community engagement at the District’s fifth annual Parent University event. Dr. Maria Covarrubias, an educational leadership coach and Harvard alumnus, will join Monica Garcia, an advisor for the John Hopkins Center for Talented (CTY), along with LUSD staff and parents in presenting workshops that help families guide their children to success. Workshops will be provided in both English and Spanish. Topics will include getting an edge in English and math; the difference between diagnosis and eligibility in special education; and college and career pathways.
