Lynwood’s Washington Elementary Honored as Top Los Angeles School

Washington Elementary School was recognized on May 4 as one of LA's Top Public Schools for underserved students during the Top Schools LA: Leading the Way for Educational Equity conference at the University of Southern California. Washington received the distinction for serving a significant number of low-income students and narrowing the achievement gap during the 2017-18 school year. Results from the 2017-18 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics were a component to the evaluation process. At Washington Elementary, 49.4 percent of students met or exceeded state ELA proficiency standards – up from 45.2 percent the previous year.

El Monte Union School Honored for Boosting Female Diversity in Science

El Monte Union High School District’s Arroyo High School has earned the first College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science Principles courses. Arroyo was recognized for either reaching 50 percent or higher female representation in the AP course or having a percentage of the female computer science examinees meeting or exceeding that of the school’s female population.

Whittier Union Schools Recognized for Boosting Female Representation in STEM Courses

Two Whittier Union high schools have earned the first College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in their AP Computer Science Principles courses. La Serna and Whittier high schools were recognized for either reaching 50 percent or higher female representation in the AP course or having a percentage of the female computer science examinees meeting or exceeding that of the school’s female population. Out of more than 18,000 secondary schools worldwide that offer AP courses, the schools are among 685 to accomplish this feat.

Baldwin Park Unified Schools Selected for Top Los Angeles Schools Award

Kenmore Elementary and Santa Fe Fundamental School were recognized for strong results in English language arts and mathematics proficiency for low-income African American and Latino students in 2017-18, earning the Los Angeles County Top Schools Award. Kenmore and Santa Fe are two of 279 schools selected for the first annual report Top Los Angeles Public Schools for Underdeserved Students. Photos are available.

West Covina Unified Establishes International Baccalaureate Continuum

Students throughout the San Gabriel Valley can pursue a rigorous, globally focused education pathway from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade through a newly established International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum at West Covina Unified, a state-certified district of choice. Fontana Unified Students to Compete at State History Day Contest

Summit High School students Leslie Madrigal and Brian Garay and Almeria Middle School student Alyha Madrigal are heading to the History Day California competition, Friday, May 10 to Sunday, May 12, after taking first place in the senior group exhibit and junior individual exhibit categories, respectively, at San Bernardino County History Day.

West Covina Unified’s Edgewood IB Schools to Hold Shakespeare Festival

Edgewood International Baccalaureate Schools will hold their annual Shakespeare Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 6, including performances and family-friendly games. Attendees are encouraged to wear Renaissance attire. Edgewood IB Schools are at 1625 W. Durness St., West Covina.

West Covina Unified’s Edgewood IB Schools to Offer Campus Tours

The Edgewood International Baccalaureate (IB) Schools will offer campus tours for prospective students and families from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 8. Families can learn about campus life, activities and course offerings, and the benefits of the IB Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme. Edgewood IB Schools are at 1625 W. Fontana Unified to Educate Parents, Families on LCAP

Fontana Unified will offer its sixth Parent University workshop of the year, continuing its efforts to boost family engagement in the educational process. The free sessions will provide parents with insights into the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 26 at the John D. Piazza Center, 9680 Citrus Ave. Translation services will be available.

Monrovia High School Presents ‘In the Heights’

Monrovia High School’s spring production, “In the Heights,” will premiere at 7 p.m. Friday, March 22 at the Louise K. Taylor Performing Arts Center, 845 W. Colorado Blvd., Monrovia. Additional performances will be staged March 23, 29 and 30. “In the Heights,” directed by Nathanael Overby, follows the life of a young store owner in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan as he observes the joys and heartbreaks of his tightknit community.
