Monrovia Unified Elementary Schools Host Spring Concert
Monrovia Unified elementary school students will come together for a night of music during the District’s Elementary Spring Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 28 at Monrovia High School, 845 W. Colorado Blvd., Monrovia. The event is an opportunity for students to showcase the skills they have acquired throughout the school year.
West Covina Unified to Highlight Elementary IB Program
Orangewood Elementary will showcase student achievement in its International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 28. Fifth-graders will present a culminating project during the 2018-19 PYP Exhibition focused on the theme “Sharing the Planet: Passion Inspires Action.” Projects will demonstrate the transdisciplinary, collaborative inquiry process students engage in through the PYP. Orangewood is part of the International World Schools of West Covina, which offer a TK-12 continuum of IB instruction. Orangewood is at 1440 S. Orange Ave., West Covina.
Paramount Unified to Provide Students with Free Eyeglasses
Alondra Middle School students received free eyeglasses on May 28 through the District’s partnership with Vision To Learn, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating vision issues as a barrier to education. Students went through free screenings in the fall before receiving the glasses
The Rio Hondo Community College District has successfully refinanced a portion of its general obligation bonds, saving the community more than $13.9 million in interest cost that will be passed on to residents through lower tax bills. The District encompasses portions of southeast Los Angeles County and includes Whittier, El Monte, South El Monte, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, and Los Nietos.
El Monte City School District students of all grade levels enthusiastically demonstrated their knowledge of technological platforms, computer software and applications to parents and community members during the inaugural EMCSD Tech Fair, held May 30 at Durfee School.
Hundreds of Monrovia community members cheered as students from Monrovia Unified School District performed with their school bands and rode bikes, unicycles, and floats while dressed in spirit gear on May 18 during the Monrovia Days community festival parade. The three-day festival was hosted by the District, the City of Monrovia, Centre Stage, and the Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley. Edgewood Schools’ blue and gold campus was bedecked in lime green – the color associated with mental health awareness – during West Covina Unified’s inaugural Mental Wellness Festival on May 18, which connected families with mental health resources and aimed to reduce stigma. The festival featured nearly a dozen information sessions, meditation clinics, concessions, giveaways, live entertainment and family-friendly activities.

A former Rio Hondo College student who has long advocated for the homeless and other marginalized communities will give the keynote speech at Rio Hondo College’s 56th annual Commencement ceremony.
Santa Fe High School senior Madison Kelly will pursue her dream of studying aquatic mammals and ecosystems at UC San Diego – on her way to a career as a marine biologist – with the help of a $20,000 Destiny Scholarship, awarded annually by the City of Santa Fe Springs Chamber of Commerce. Kelly – recognized as an exceptional graduating senior by the chamber – has completed six Advanced Placement classes, five Honors classes, is listed as one of Santa Fe’s Top 100 students and has competed on Santa Fe’s swim and water polo teams. Kelly is also a public programs docent for the Ocean Institute of Dana Point.
