Paramount Promise Offers Students Pathway to Tuition-free Community College

Buena Park School District’s special education students are spending the summer painting, playing outside and socializing thanks to an extended school year services program designed to keep students motivated beyond the regular school year. The special education summer program, which runs through June 28, helps 70 pre-kindergarten through seventh-grade students hone gross and fine motor skills and improve social skills as they decorate classrooms and play counting games.

Whittier High School will host a Celebration of Life memorial service in honor of one of its most distinguished Cardinals, William C. Gordon, a Class of 1955 graduate and donor to the campus who passed away in March. He was 82. The celebration will take place at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29 in the William C. Gordon Library at Whittier High School, 12417 Philadelphia St., Whittier.

Baldwin Park Unified’s Kenmore Elementary School’s success in preparing students to perform at grade level and creating lifelong learners has earned the school a spot on the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE) 2018-19 Honor Roll. Kenmore Elementary was named a Star School, a category for high-performing schools with significant populations of socioeconomically disadvantaged students. The Honor Roll is based on overall performance on state standardized tests.

Morningside High School salutatorian Evan Hardin will head to college this fall while leaving behind a legacy of leadership that has inspired the community. Hardin, who finished with a 4.29 GPA, served as Morningside’s ASB vice president, was involved in student congress, and was a mentor in the Omega Gentleman Youth Mentoring (Omega Gents) program. He was also named a semi-finalist for the prestigious Gates Scholarship.

Rosemead High School has been named to the 2018-19 California Honor Roll for demonstrating consistently high levels of student academic achievement, narrowing the achievement gap and preparing students for college. The honor is given by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and sponsored by the Campaign for Businesses and Educational Excellence (CBEE), based on the results of state standardized tests in math and English language arts (ELA) taken in spring 2018.
Oak Street Elementary Principal Richard Barter is retiring this summer after 41 years of service in a variety of roles with the Inglewood Unified School District. Barter was honored at the District’s Board of Education meeting on June 19.
Monrovia High School has been recognized by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence with a place on the 2018-19 California Honor Roll for narrowing the achievement gap on state standardized tests. Monrovia is listed as a Star School, a category indicating that it enrolls a high percentage of students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged.
A new study from the Learning Policy Institute in Palo Alto lists Bassett Unified as one of 156 school districts where teacher qualifications and preparation are linked to higher-than-expected test scores in math and English language arts for African American and Hispanic students.
