Monrovia High School Students Learn Job Skills Through Coffee Cart Program

Monrovia High School students from the school’s Coffee Roasters program are learning financial and communication skills by selling and preparing coffee for faculty and staff as part of the school’s WorkAbility and Transition Partnerships program. The program opens doors to job opportunities from local business partners for students in special education. Students learn independence and gain experience for life-skill development.

West Covina Unified Student Named to Under-20 National Soccer Team

West Covina High School senior Madison Perez has been selected to play center back for the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team, which develops players in preparation for the senior women’s national team. Perez joined 19 other players for training camp from Aug. 24 to Sept. 1 at the Elite Athlete Training Center, where the team faced off against the Japan U-20 Women’s National Team in two matches.

Fontana Unified High School Pilots Parent Link Crew Program

A Summit High School pilot program designed to assist and support parents as they transition into their first year as high school parents will be used by peer mentoring provider The Boomerang Project to be implemented by high schools across the nation in 2020-21. Parent Link Crew is inspired by Summit’s Golden Bell award-winning Link Crew program, where juniors and seniors act as mentors to incoming freshmen. In Parent Link Crew, parents of junior and senior students perform the same role for parents of freshmen.

Baldwin Park High School Graduate Wins Automotive Scholarship

Baldwin Park High School graduate Diego Torres was awarded a $2,500 scholarship by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to go toward his educational pursuits in automotive technology at Rio Hondo College. Torres was selected based on his leadership skills and work ethic and was recognized with the scholarship during the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Motorsports Division’s third annual charity car show on Sept. 7.

Paramount Unified Partners with County on Community Schools Initiative

Paramount Unified is partnering with the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) and Department of Mental Health on a Community Schools Initiative that will increase support services for students. The Community Schools Initiative, launched in September, will focus Los Angeles County resources on Paramount Unified School District students over the course of a three-year pilot. The District will collaborate with community partners to provide additional health and social services, youth and community development and community engagement.

Fontana Unified Freshmen Connect with Community, Explore Careers

Nearly 500 Henry J. Kaiser High School freshmen gathered around tables in the library, engaging in lively conversation with local professionals for the school’s Coming of Age interviews on Sept. 9. The activity, part of Kaiser High’s project-based learning instruction, brought nearly 40 community members to campus, including a financial adviser, Subaru representatives, a marriage and family therapist, city officials and government workers, law enforcement, a social worker, a higher education professional and more. Freshmen took turns interviewing them to learn about different ways to achieve success after high school.

Bonita Unified Elementary Students Receive Civics Lessons from Community Leaders

Oak Mesa Elementary School second-graders learned how government laws and regulations aim to ensure community safety during a week of mini-civics lessons from City of La Verne leaders. La Verne City Councilmember Tim Hepburn, La Verne police Cpl. Mark Gutierrez and La Verne fire Cpt. Kevin Wilton visited Oak Mesa second-grade classrooms to augment curriculum introducing students to basic facets of American government.

Lynwood Unified Celebrates New District Athletic Field with Ribbon-cutting Ceremony

Lynwood Unified student-athletes joined Board of Education members and elected officials to celebrate a new District athletic field during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 12 at Lynwood Middle School. The field will host athletic programs from Firebaugh High School and Lynwood Middle School, along with other District functions. The nearly $2.5 million project began in February 2018 and features bleachers, an all-weather track, CIF-competitive field, goal posts and updated fencing.

Bonita Unified, Soroptimists Treat Students to School Clothes, Supplies

In partnership with Soroptimist International of San Dimas/La Verne, Bonita Unified teachers and administrators treated 70 students to a back-to-school shopping spree at the La Verne Target. In addition to receiving backpacks and school supplies, each student received an $80 clothing budget and a shopping assistant from among 50 volunteers from the Bonita Unified school board, police department, fire department and other local organizations. The “Bonita Children’s Shopping Day” has provided the shopping experience to students annually since 1995.
