FUSD Robotics Team to Lead Fontana Christmas Parade as Grand Marshals
Randall Pepper Elementary School’s international robotics success will be celebrated community wide at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, when robotics students, coaches and administrators serve as the grand marshals in the 2019 Fontana Christmas Parade. The Randall Pepper team was selected after representing the District and city on a world stage at the World Robot Olympiad Friendship Invitational, where they netted the International Friendship Award. The parade will be held at Sierra Avenue and Arrow Boulevard in Fontana.
Plymouth Elementary to Host Multicultural Family Night
Plymouth Elementary will host its annual Multicultural Family Night event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13 at 1300 Boley St., Monrovia. The event promotes intercultural understanding with booths featuring storytelling, food, dance and art based on a variety of countries of origin, backgrounds and beliefs.
El Monte Union will celebrate the groundbreaking for a 15,000-square-foot Multipurpose Building & Gymnasium at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11 at Fernando R. Ledesma High School, 12347 Ramona Blvd., El Monte. The $13 million facility will feature a performance space with grandstand seating, basketball court, fitness areas, outdoor classrooms, an outdoor weightlifting area, snack bar, concession and lobby areas, restrooms, classrooms and a learning garden to promote healthy eating. The facility will serve as a gathering place for athletic events, performances and neighborhood functions. This is the first major project to be funded by Measure HS, a $190 million facilities bond approved by voters in November 2018.
Whittier Union High School District students will ring in the holidays, singing traditional songs and holiday favorites as part of the annual Choral Festival at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11 at Whittier College Memorial Chapel, 13406 Philadelphia St., Whittier. Choral groups from California, La Serna, Santa Fe and Whittier high schools will receive evaluations from this year’s adjudicator, Joseph Modica, interim associate dean of the University of Redlands College of Arts and Sciences and director of the School of Music.
Baldwin Park Unified students enjoyed a $60 shopping spree for winter clothes, shoes and even a few toys on Dec. 10 as part of the 23rd annual Santa Clothes Project. In collaboration with the City of Baldwin Park, Walmart in Baldwin Park and other community partners, BPUSD raised $21,000 for 350 students.
Summit High School will advance its two JV Ethical Hacking teams to the CyberPatriot XII National Youth Cyber Defense Competition semifinals on Friday, Jan. 24, after scoring in the top 25% of their Gold tier in the state competition.
Emery School fourth-grader Apollo Meneses was the picture of determination as he orated the Greek legend of Adonis, complete with sound effects, to a cheering crowd during Buena Park School District’s inaugural Speech Tournament, held Nov. 16 at Whitaker School. Meneses said he practiced in front of his mother, in front of the mirror and even while he was supposed to be focusing on other work.
After reviewing feedback from more than 400 community members during townhall sessions, Buena Park School District will adjust enrollment boundaries and reconfigure two schools in an effort to balance attendance, strengthen TK-8 pathways and boost program offerings. The unanimous decision, made Dec. 2, will add sixth grade to Buena Park Junior High, turning the campus into a middle school in fall 2020. In addition, Beatty Elementary will be restored to its originally intended use as a middle school, providing greater program depth for students in grades six through eight across the District.
Río Hondo College is now enrolling students for its Homeland Security Program, a cutting-edge discipline that will teach students the latest skills and techniques for preparing themselves, their families and their community to respond to natural hazards and acts of terrorism. Rio Hondo College offers a Certificate of Achievement and Associate of Science in the discipline. Spring semester begins Saturday, Jan. 25.
