Paramount Unified Provides Students with Free Eyeglasses

Alondra Middle School students received free eyeglasses on Oct. 25 through the District’s partnership with Vision To Learn, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating vision issues as a barrier to education. Students went through free screenings in the fall before receiving the glasses. VTL specialists joined staff members to distribute the glasses.

Monrovia’s Bradoaks Elementary Students Incorporate Science into Halloween

Students from Bradoaks Elementary School put science to the test as Monrovia firefighters, perched atop their fire engine ladder, dropped pumpkins – some carved, some not – to determine which can generate the largest splat. Each grade level solved questions such as ‘what will happen to two different pumpkins when dropped from two different heights?’ and ‘will a hollow pumpkin or a pumpkin full of seeds create a larger splat when dropped from a ladder?’ Students integrated the theme of pumpkins into their science and reading lessons all month, and the pumpkin drop served as the culminating activity.

Lynwood Celebrates Success with Community at State of District Event

Lynwood Unified’s superintendent and Board of Education joined students and community members during the State of the District Event on Oct. 25. Students and staff presented, celebrating achievements of the District and discussing Lynwood Unified’s vision for the future.

Lynwood High Student’s Artwork Featured in Calendar

Lynwood High School student Wendy Cuevas was selected to be a featured artist in the Occupational Therapy Training Program 2020 Calendar. Cuevas produced a rock painting that took two months to create.

Inglewood Unified Scholar Selected as Stellar Student of Month

City Honors International Prep High School senior Lydia Mabamije has been selected as November’s Inglewood Unified School District Stellar Student. Mabamije has earned a 4.0 GPA, founded a French club at her school and leads the woodwind section of the Inglewood High School band. Each month, IUSD staff nominate an exceptional student who is thriving in the classroom and beyond.

Summit High Student Wins Fontana Unified Red Ribbon Week PSA Contest

Summit High School student Anthony Arciga captured first place in Fontana Unified’s Red Ribbon Week PSA contest for his outstanding public service announcement. Arciga, a student in Summit High’s TV production program, was honored for his work at the Red Ribbon Breakfast on Oct. 24.

Fontana Unified Educators, Alumnus Honored by Senator Connie Leyva

Henry J. Kaiser High School principal Terry Abernathy, Redwood Elementary counselor Eduardo Valencia and Fontana Unified alumnus Jashandeep Lobana were recognized by Senator Connie Leyva on Oct. 21 at the third annual Terrific 20 of Senate District 20 event. Each year, local residents are recognized for their commitment and contributions in fields like education, community activism, business, law enforcement and hospitality.

Baldwin Park Unified Senior Recognized for Perseverance, Overcoming Adversity

Kendra Nguyen, a senior at Baldwin Park High School, was dealt a heavy blow in elementary school with her mother’s death from pancreatic cancer in the fifth grade and her father’s desertion. Nguyen’s courageous spirit helped her overcome these obstacles and she has now distinguished herself as an academic leader on campus. Ranked first in a class of 383 seniors, Nguyen has received the Every Student Succeeding Scholarship from the District’s chapter of the Association of California School Administrators.

WCUSD Early College Academy Freshmen Present Eco-friendly Solutions

West Covina Unified’s Mt. SAC Early College Academy freshmen impressed educators and parents with well-researched, passionate presentations on the effects of plastic pollution on the Steller sea lion, elephant poaching, ghost net fishing, pollinator decline and more during the school’s second annual Environmental Solutions Fair on Nov. 8. The fair capped the first major interdisciplinary project at the Academy, a dual-enrollment public high school that provides students with the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and up to two years of transferrable college credit simultaneously.

El Monte City School District to Host Leadership Workshop for Parents

El Monte City School District will host a parent workshop at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, where attendees can learn about individual habits that form the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” – which are leadership skills taught to all students through the District’s Leader in Me program. The lesson will cover habit 7 or “sharpen the saw,” which teaches students to take care of themselves mentally and physically.
