Baldwin Park Unified Teachers Receive Classroom Grants

Two Baldwin Park Unified teachers were surprised with $100 grants from the California Retired Teachers Association. Baldwin Park High School architecture and engineering teacher Jeffrey Warden and Central Elementary School fourth grade teacher Melissa Leopoldo will use the funds to purchase classroom tools and materials.

Whittier Union Recognized for Student Health and Wellness Protocols

Whittier Union High School District recently received the inaugural Lifesaver Award from the Los Angeles County Child and Adolescent Suicide Review Team for its robust and proactive suicide prevention protocols. The California Legislature in 2016 passed Assembly Bill 2246, which mandates student suicide prevention and intervention policies for every California school district. Whittier Union established its Student Well-Being Program in 2014 to address challenges impacting student health and wellness, increase school-site support and provide resources for families.

Inglewood Unified 7th-grader Recognized in Stellar Student Spotlight

Frank D. Parent seventh-grader Saraiyah Slack has been selected for this month's Stellar Student Spotlight for her continued achievement in the classroom. She maintains a 3.7 GPA, is a student fundraising leader for the Associated Student Body and is a student representative on the School Site Council. Slack aspires to become a computer science entrepreneur.

Monrovia Unified’s Early College Program Wins Golden Bell Award

Monrovia Unified’s Early College Program (ECP), a dual-enrollment partnership with Citrus College that allows students to graduate from high school with up to two years of college coursework, has been recognized with a Golden Bell by the California School Boards Association.

West Covina High Yearbook Lauded by American Scholastic Press Association

West Covina High School’s 2018-19 yearbook staff was recognized by the American Scholastic Association, capturing first place in the 2019 Yearbook and Magazine Awards. “The Quest,” West Covina High’s student-created yearbook, embraced the theme Finding Your True Colors in 2018-19.

Inglewood High’s Jared Heywood Named Student-Athlete of Week

Inglewood High School senior Jared Heywood was profiled as the Student-Athlete of the Week by the L.A. Sentinel for his success in the classroom and on the football field. Heywood is taking college-level courses that include journalism, economics and communication while getting a head start on higher education. On the field, he helped lead the Sentinels to the 10-0 record and Pioneer League title. He will attend the University of Rhode Island in fall.

Fontana Unified Students Earn Certifications in Construction Career Tech Pathway

Nine students from Fontana Unified’s Citrus High School are one step closer to mastering a trade after completing the school’s Residential and Commercial Construction career tech pathway and earning a core certification from the National Center for Construction Education and Research. Students completed hands-on construction projects, in which they employed safety strategies, used hand and power tools and applied mathematics and measurement skills.

Paramount Unified’s Odyssey STEM Academy Hosts San Marcos Unified

San Marcos Unified Superintendent Dr. Carmen García joined staff members during an observational visit to Paramount Unified’s innovative Odyssey STEM Academy on Jan. 6. The visitors engaged students and toured the school’s Environmental Sustainability Complex, Makerspace and classrooms to glean how Odyssey works to empower learners.

Baldwin Park Unified’s Santa Fe Recognized as California Distinguished School

Baldwin Park Unified’s Santa Fe School has been honored as a 2020 California Distinguished School for closing the achievement gap and attaining exemplary student performances on state standardized tests. On the California School Dashboard, Santa Fe earned the second-highest rating in English language arts scores on state tests, with the school coming in 32.6 points above the state standard and increasing 5 points from 2018.

West Covina High to Stage ‘How to Succeed’ Musical

West Covina High School’s theater department will stage the musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” from Thursday, Jan. 30 to Sunday, Feb. 2 at the Covina Center for the Performing Arts, 104 N. Citrus Ave., Covina. Tickets are available online.
