The Bonita Unified School District Board of Education on May 6 appointed Krista Chakmak – a parent, school volunteer, Save the Heartbeat Foundation volunteer and member of the City of La Verne Youth and Family Action Committee – as its newest member. Chakmak, who will serve the seven months remaining in the term of retired member Matthew Lyons, was chosen unanimously from among four candidates interviewed by the board.
Whittier Union seniors donned college apparel, held school pennants and posed with colorful balloons as they reminisced about their high school experiences and celebrated their next steps – into college, military or careers – during virtual College Signing Day activities on May 1. College Signing Day recognizes high school seniors’ commitment to continuing their education at four-year universities, community colleges, the military or vocational schools. Although many universities have extended decision day until June 1, many students have already made their choices.
West Covina Unified School District celebrated the accomplishments of 770 graduates from its two comprehensive high schools and continuation school with commencement ceremonies on June 5 and 6, held at West Covina High School.
Lynwood Unified students celebrated their path to higher education on May 1 during National College Signing Day, observed this year with a virtual flair.
Lynwood High School counselors delivered signs to seniors and invited them to fill in their college destinations and post them to social media.
LeGore Elementary has been named a Leader in Me Lighthouse School for its excellence in applying the “7 Habits of Highly Successful People” leadership program to inspire student success and college readiness. The school is the third campus in El Monte City School District and one of about 300 schools in the world to receive the two-year certification.
Baldwin Park High School teachers, staff and administrators will celebrate students for their display of resiliency, patience and commitment to their education during the transition to remote learning. While students and educators are connecting online, everyone eagerly awaits a return to campus – making an uplifting drive-through parade an important way to connect and reunite through safe means. Baldwin Park High’s caravan will give special recognition to the 394 seniors in the Class of 2020 who are concluding their time at BPUSD and preparing for the next chapter of their educational journey and future careers.
Arroyo High School Principal Angelita Gonzales, who has been the top administrator at the school since 2013 and an educator at El Monte Union for over 35 years, will retire in June. Gonzales, who was first hired as an English language development teacher at Rosemead High in 1984, has worked at every El Monte Union school throughout her career and held several roles, including counselor, bilingual resource teacher, migrant education coordinator, compensatory education coordinator and assistant principal.
Bonita Unified Superintendent Shares Video Update with Community
Bonita Unified School District Superintendent Carl J. Coles participated in a digital interview via Zoom, answering frequently asked questions to update the Bonita Unified community on resources such as free meals for students, Chromebook distribution to support remote learning and grading, graduation and fall enrollment.
Baldwin Park Unified Adult School Serves as COVID-19 Testing Site
Baldwin Park Unified Adult and Community Center is serving as a free drive-through COVID-19 testing site for Baldwin Park residents. The tests, which will be available for as long as supplies last, are being provided through a partnership that includes Vital Medical Services, Baldwin Park Unified and the City of Baldwin Park.
The Baldwin Park Unified Board of Education on April 28 unanimously adopted a resolution outlining the temporary assignment of grades and evaluation of student achievement during this prolonged period of school closures. The decision, taken during a virtual meeting, follows guidance from the California Department of Education (CDE) issued on April 1.
