Hacienda La Puente Unified Approves Funding Strategy to Continue Classroom Renovations

Hacienda La Puente Unified School District’s Board of Education celebrated the completion of several Measure BB-funded classroom modernization projects and approved a new funding strategy to resume construction and planning for the remaining District campuses during the Special Board Meeting on Oct. 21 and continuance meeting on Oct. 26. Modernization projects are divided into nine phases that encompass every school in the District. After completing all projects in phases one and two, the District will further outline the plan for completing the last seven phases.

Whittier Union Transition Programs Partners with Local Businesses

Whittier Union High School District’s Transition Program is continuing to build valuable partnerships with members of the community, providing students with real-life work experience through its partnership with Smart & Final. The partnership has given students the opportunity to gain work experience and expand upon their skills while providing businesses in the community with much-needed help. Smart & Final has partnered with Whittier Union High School District for more than six years, hiring dozens of students on average every year.

Baldwin Park Unified Students Join Lights On Afterschool Event

Baldwin Park Unified’s Geddes Elementary School students enjoyed the annual Lights On Afterschool event, hosted by Think Together, on Nov. 1. Think Together educators centered this year’s BPUSD event around a harvest festival theme, with students creating seasonal art pieces using clay, paint, wood and multicolor pom poms. Lights On Afterschool is a nationwide celebration of the importance of after-school programs.

Bonita Unified Teachers Receive Mini-Grants from Rotary Club

Twelve Bonita Unified School District teachers were awarded mini-grants from the La Verne Rotary Club, providing financial support for educators who seek new ideas to enrich classroom experiences.The mini-grants, totaling $3,229.56, were presented to this year’s awardees during the Nov. 3 Board of Education meeting.

Whittier Union Celebrates Parent Mentors During Virtual Ceremony

Proudly waving certificates and beaming with pride, 11 Whittier Union parents enrolled in the District’s Path to College Success Parent Mentors program celebrated the completion of their three-month parent mentor program, designed to increase parent engagement and support parents of English learners, during a virtual ceremony held Oct. 27. During the ceremony, parents shared clips of a final video project demonstrating their understanding of a topic they studied, such as the benefits of being bilingual or how to apply for financial aid. The parent graduates were the second cohort to complete the program, joining 12 parents who graduated in October 2020.

El Monte Union High School District to Hold Public Hearing

The EMUHSD Board of Trustees will hold a final public hearing to consider, select and adopt a final trustee area map. The public is invited to participate and provide input regarding the remaining draft maps. Baldwin Park Unified to Host COVID-19 Vaccine Informational Webinar

Baldwin Park Unified is partnering with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to present an informational webinar on the COVID-19 vaccines from 4 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10, via Webex. The webinar will present the latest information regarding vaccines for students, and Dr. Nava Yeganeh, an infectious disease specialist in Los Angeles with more than 17 years of experience, will provide answers to parent questions.

Senator Gonzalez, Assembly Speaker Rendon, and Elected Officials Visit Lynwood High School Site to Discuss Improvements Following Building Collapse

California State Senator Lena Gonzalez and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon walked the empty Lynwood Imperial campus on Oct. 26 to view in-person the construction failures that led to a building collapse in June 2020. Lynwood Unified invited elected officials, including the office of Congresswoman Nanette Barragan, to view the vacated site as the District explores options for building improvements while prioritizing the safety of students and staff. Fontana Unified Kicks Off 24th Annual ‘Fontana Santas’ Toy Drive

Fontana Unified has launched its 24th annual Fontana Santas Toy Drive, in which community organizations, District employees and Fontana residents come together to bring holiday cheer to families in need. Donations of unwrapped toys and gift cards can be dropped off at the Fontana School Police Department, 9680 Citrus Ave., Building 9, Fontana, and at all FUSD campuses. The toy drive will culminate with a drive-thru distribution event for families in need identified by school sites, to be held on Saturday, Dec. 18 at the District Office.

Whittier Union High School Hosts Parent Education Day

Whittier Union High School District’s Santa Fe High School held a Parent Education Day on Oct. 23, providing parents the opportunity to better understand the world of their children by learning more about the issues they face today. Since the launch of the program in 2003, approximately 300 parents have attended Parent Education Day annually. This year, parents chose three of 15 workshops to attend, which discussed relevant topics such as social media, college and careers, substance abuse and more. Parent Education Day, offered at no cost to families, aims to help parents gain knowledge on important topics relating to teens, as well as equip parents with the resources to help their students persevere through the challenges they are facing.
